The political science degree program at Transylvania University emphasizes hands-on experiential learning. Students learn by engaging the real world; completing internships and mentorships with policymakers and practitioners; participating in active learning in the classroom; and completing in-depth research projects focused on addressing complex societal challenges.
Transylvania political science graduates have succeeded in a range of careers after graduation, including law, government, nonprofit, and business. The thing that distinguishes our graduates is their commitment to change and passion for making the world a better place.
Steve Hess, Associate Professor of Political Science
Political science at Transy is an action-driven, change-focused liberal arts program. Our students learn about the various mechanisms through which groups and individuals can influence the political process and bring about real change in society. Located in downtown Lexington, Transy is a short walk from city hall, federal and county courthouses, and dozens of law firms and nonprofit organizations (NGOs). Throughout the year, students intern, work, and participate in shadowing experiences at local organizations connected to the public sector, gaining professional experience and learning how the political and legal processes they learn about in class unfold in the real world. Our students are also encouraged to study abroad and have studied in countries such as the Netherlands, China, Spain, Argentina, Morocco, Chile, South Korea, and Czechia in recent years.
Transy’s alumni network includes federal, state and local judges; attorneys; elected officials; leaders in the nonprofit sector; and officials in an array of government agencies. Our alums are a frequent presence on campus, sharing their experience and advice to interested students, serving as mentors through the 100 Doors program, and supporting graduates as they build their professional networks after graduation.
Beyond course content, the program stresses the cultivation of good analytic skills through reading, writing, research and presentations. Many students travel abroad to study foreign governments, and in some cases, complete internships within governing bodies and with governmental officials both in the U.S. and abroad.
Our program is committed to a revival of the “public sphere” in social, political and academic institutions. We work to fulfill one of the fundamental ends of liberal education—to cultivate civic spirit and the human capacity for free choice and self-rule, collectively and individually.
