Transylvania receives national sexual assault prevention award

LEXINGTON Ky.—Transylvania University on Friday received a national award for outstanding efforts to prevent sexual assaults. The Campus Prevention Network recognized the university with a 2018 Prevention Excellence Award at the annual CPN summit presented by EVERFI in New Orleans. Transylvania was one of five institutions across the nation to receive the recognition. “The Title IX Office was honored to accept this award on behalf of our institution as a testament to the dedication of our campus community to promote and foster an inclusive, respectful and safe environment,” said Amber Morgan, academic disability services and Title IX coordinator. EVERFI praised the university’s dedication to create a safe campus, as well as its “effective education and prevention initiatives.”  Transylvania regularly educates students, faculty and staff about assault prevention and encourages them to speak out when they encounter high-risk situations. According to EVERFI, the university stood apart from more than 100 institutions in critical areas. The assessment considered factors such as scores from the Sexual Assault Diagnostic Inventory, interviews with campus professionals and a review of Transylvania’s prevention efforts. “This achievement is also a testament to [the university’s] investment in creating a campus environment in which students can live, learn and thrive.” Laura Bryan, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the university, is committed to building upon these achievements. “We continuously strive to provide the safest possible environment for each of our students to not only learn but also develop as

In Memoriam: Original Transylvania titan C.M. Newton passes away at age 88

Lexington, Ky. – Legendary coach and administrator C.M. Newton, a Transylvania Athletics Hall-of-Famer, passed away on Monday at the age of 88. Revered as a pioneer and monolith in collegiate athletics, Newton’s career spanned over five decades and began at Transylvania University as the men’s basketball coach in 1951. While he was known by many as an athletic administrator at multiple institutions, including the University of Kentucky, and a fixture in NCAA basketball, Newton’s legacy transcended his title and location. “Newton’s influence as a coach and an administrator was undeniable,” said Transylvania Vice President for Enrollment and Student Life, Dr. Holly Sheilley. “He was instrumental in breaking down racial barriers for players and coaches.” “Coach Newton was one of the classiest men in college sports,” stated 17th-year Transylvania men’s basketball head coach Brian Lane on his predecessor’s passing. “Every day when I sit in my office, I have a picture of Coach Newton behind me on the wall to remind me how important the coach-player relationship is. He started his career at Transylvania but he never forgot his roots. I will always cherish the day he asked if he could come by to talk a little bit.” Newton’s legacy of leadership and service included the recruitment of the first African-American players at both Transylvania and the University of Alabama and later the hiring of the first African-American coaches at the University of Kentucky in Tubby Smith and Bernadette Mattox. RAFYs celebrate Transylvania Pioneers on Sunday

LEXINGTON, Ky.—Transylvania University celebrated its standout student-athletes Sunday during The RAFYs, the school’s newly renamed sports banquet held at the end of each academic year at the Clive M. Beck Center. The event recognized the achievements of more than 400 Transylvania athletes on 26 varsity teams—not only on their fields of play, but also in the classrooms and community. The RAFYs culminated a successful athletic season at Transylvania, with six teams competing in NCAA Division III national championships. Some of the top honors this year went to the women’s lacrosse and golf teams, which had the most successful seasons in their programs’ history. Former CSX president to deliver Transylvania commencement address May 26

LEXINGTON, Ky.—Alvin R. “Pete” Carpenter, former CSX Transportation president and CEO, will deliver Transylvania University’s commencement address on Saturday, May 26, as the university celebrates its 2018 graduates. Carpenter is a 1964 Transylvania alumnus and served on the school’s Board of Trustees from 1993-2000. The Kentucky native now lives in Jacksonville, Fla. Carpenter and his wife, Marilyn, were the lead donors for a major interior upgrade of Transylvania’s Carpenter Academic Center, which wrapped up this spring. He also is a recipient of the university’s Morrison Medallion, which is given to alumni for outstanding service to the school and its programs. “Our graduating seniors can learn valuable life lessons from Pete Carpenter,” President Seamus Carey said. “Not only has he excelled in the business world, but he has exemplified living generously, which is the theme of this academic year. Mr. Carpenter’s efforts to transform the university’s main academic building into a cutting-edge learning environment will help sustain our liberal arts mission well into the 21st century.” Transylvania’s commencement will begin at 9 a.m. in front of historic Old Morrison. The rain location will be the Clive M. Beck Center. Students in this year’s graduating class have distinguished themselves academically, with numerous accolades.
