As Transylvania University’s 2019-20 campus focuses on resilience this academic year, creative and thought leaders from across the nation will bring their ideas and work to the Lexington college in this year’s Creative Intelligence Series.
“We need to cultivate resilience and inventiveness so we can energetically respond to climate change, challenges to our core democratic ideals, populations on the move, shifting job markets, radical expansions in knowledge, and the evolution of technology at dizzying speed,” said Zoé Strecker, an art professor and director of Creative Intelligence and special academic programming.
“The Creative Intelligence programming for this year brings a broad range of artists, scholars, activists and storytellers to campus to catalyze the conversations around appreciating and fostering resilience in all of us,” Strecker said.
All of Transylvania’s Creative Intelligence events are free, and the public is encouraged to attend. The series is part of Transylvania’s New Frontiers season, which asks us to go beyond the familiar with new ideas, art and music. The 2019-20 Creative Intelligence series includes:
- Lyndsey Gilpin, a lecture on journalism at the intersection of ecology, justice and culture in the American South, Sept. 25
- Yale Younger Poets, a reading with Maurice Manning, Transylvania professor of English and writer-in-residence, and Ansel Elkins, visiting writer-in-residence at the University of Kentucky, Oct. 22
- Veronica Golos, a reading and lecture from the award-winning poet, curator, teacher and author, Nov. 13
- Paul Brown ’13, a curator’s talk and panel discussion with the writer and curator on Transylvania’s Morlan Gallery exhibit “If I Could Turn Back Time,” Nov. 20.
- Madonna Thunder Hawk & Warrior Women, a screening and virtual conversation with the Native American activist: POSTPONED UNTIL WINTER TERM
- Anne Lewis, a screening and conversation with the longtime Appalshop director, Jan. 15
- Eli Meiners, a curator’s talk and panel discussion with the museum manager for Cincinnati’s 21c Museum Hotel and curator of Morlan Gallery’s “Resilience 101,” Jan. 22.
- Joy Harjo,Transylvania’s 2020 Kenan Lecture, the U.S. poet laureate speaks “On Resilience,” Mar. 18
- Catherine Flowers, a lecture on “Wastewater Inequality” from the senior fellow for environmental justice and civic engagement at the Center for Earth Ethics, April 8
