An immersive video installation by Transylvania University professor Zoé Strecker will be on public display for the first time starting Tuesday in the school’s Morlan Gallery. The work invites contemplation of the spectacular biodiversity in Kentucky’s old growth forests.
Strecker’s installation “Forest Portals: Pine Mountain (Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall)” incorporates cracked porcelain clay, which is dirt, and dirt is a foundation for terrestrial life — the shared site of the living and the transformed, home to human and non humans alike.
“Forest Portals” has been on display in 21C in Lexington, but to private audiences only. This is the first time the meditative work has been available for public viewing.
The installation, which runs through Oct. 11, is part of the university’s upcoming “Studio 300,” Kentucky’s only digital arts and music festival.
“Forest Portals” runs side-by-side with “A Matter of the Heart: The Dan Selter Retrospective,” which features a variety of pieces by the renowned ceramist and professor emeritus of art.

The exhibit and both events are free and open to the public in Morlan Gallery, which is in the Mitchell Fine Arts Center. Plenty of free and nearly parking is available.
