Two juniors from Lexington have been selected as the 2019-20 recipients of the Charles and Susan Shearer Scholarship. Meredith Mason and Diaka Savane will receive the full-tuition scholarship for their senior year of study at Transylvania.
Savane and Mason were recognized for outstanding academic performance, leadership qualities, campus contributions and strength of character. The scholarship was established by the Transylvania Board of Trustees to honor former President Charles Shearer and his wife after nearly three decades of dedication to Transy.
“What I find most impressive about Meredith is her strength in new situations and confidence and desire to perform well even when faced with the unknown,” said Christi Hayne ‘03, assistant professor of accounting. Hayne wrote a recommendation for Mason for the scholarship.
“Meredith has been the perfect example to follow in every aspect of life,” Madison Campbell, a Transylvania sophomore, added. “She excels in the classroom, thrives socially yet responsibly, and is looking to help others every chance she gets. ”
Mason and Savane both came to Transylvania after graduating from Lexington’s Henry Clay High School in 2016. Mason is studying accounting, while Savane is majoring in International Affairs and French Language and Literature.
French professor Brian Arganbright was among those who recommended Savane. “Diaka willingly speaks up on issues confronting young people today and never shies away from challenging stereotypes and broadening perspectives,” he said.
“Diaka has demonstrated incredible passion, tremendous care, and an inquisitive nature that improves our support to the Transylvania community,” said Hannah Piechowski, director of student transitions and parent programming.
Junior Sarah Agard said Savane is highly respected by her peers. “Her independence and ability to make everyone feel welcome is something I have always admired about her,” Agard explained.
Savane is also one of six Transylvania students who will travel abroad this summer to conduct research, where she will create a collection of oral family history in Guinea.
The Charles and Susan Shearer Scholarships are merit-based awards available for rising Transylvania seniors. Students must have at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average, be in good standing, and be in their third year at Transylvania to be eligible to apply. The scholarship covers a student’s annual tuition and general fee.
