Transylvania wins AIKCU’s annual “Battle of the Bumpers” contest for third year running and raises over $7,000 for scholarship fund

LEXINGTON, Ky.—With the help of alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents and friends, Transylvania University is once again the winner in the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities (AIKCU) “Battle of the Bumpers.” After back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009, Transylvania aggressively promoted its plates again in 2010, beating out the other 19 AIKCU campuses to put the most campus license plates on Kentucky highways and the most dollars in the school’s general scholarship fund. Transylvania’s efforts helped increase their total sales to 768, an increase of 33 license plates over 2009. Ten dollars from the sale of each plate is returned directly to the school’s general scholarship fund, translating into $7,680 for student scholarships at Transylvania. Overall, sales of Kentucky Independent Higher Education plates raised almost $42,000 for student scholarships in 2010. “I am impressed with the number of alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff and friends who choose to show their Transylvania pride with a white and crimson license plate,” said Transylvania President R. Owen Williams. “In particular, the support of our loyal alumni has been remarkable.” The Kentucky Independent Higher Education series plates took to the roads in 2002. Each independent college and university had its own plate, but they all shared a common design theme. Thanks to advances in license plate printing technology and some changes in state regulations, AIKCU members were able to work with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to redesign their plates in late 2007.

“Aloha, Say the Pretty Girls,” opens Thursday, Feb. 17 at Transylvania University

LEXINGTON, Ky.—Babies, wild dogs, komodo dragons and hula dancers abound in Naomi Iizuka’s “Aloha, Say the Pretty Girls,” which runs Feb. 17-19 and 24-26 at 7:30 p.m., and Feb. 20 at 2 p.m., in Transylvania’s Lucille C. Little Theater.  Presented by Transylvania University Theater and directed by Sullivan Canaday White, visiting assistant professor of drama, the fantastical play is about finding your tribe in a world gone haywire. Winner of the prestigious Whiting Writers’ Award in 1999, Iizuka’s play received its world premiere in the 1999 Humana Festival of Plays at Actors Theatre of Louisville. “‘Aloha, Say the Pretty Girls’ is a hilarious show with characters who are searching for what they are missing in their lives, something not only the actors, but all of us, can relate to,” said senior Emileigh Burns, assistant director of the play. “Working on this show has been an experience of a lifetime. As a senior, this is my last department show, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.” A post-performance colloquia on the play will begin immediately following the shows on Feb. 17 and 24. Tickets are $10 and may be reserved by calling the box office at (859) 281-3621, Monday-Friday from 1-4 p.m. For more information, contact the fine arts office at (859) 233-8141.

Transylvania professors find art and stories in curbside furniture

LEXINGTON, Ky.—On January 8, 2010, Transylvania professors Kurt Gohde and Kremena Todorova took a photograph that would become the first of their 277 images for their exhibit “Discarded.” On that day, they spotted a sofa on the curb and asked the owners to sit on it one last time before it was taken away. One year later, they took the last photo. The photographs are labeled with the location, date, time and temperature. They offer glimpses into frozen moments in the lives of discarded pieces of furniture, and the people willing to pose – families, college students, couples, children, hipsters and tradesmen. A small collection of images from “Discarded” is on displace the Good Foods Co-op Café on Southland Drive through February 28 and the entire exhibit, which also includes music and poetry inspired by the photographs, will be on display at the Land of Tomorrow (LOT) Gallery beginning February 18. An opening reception will be held on February 18, from 7-10 p.m., featuring a song by Vandaveer and poems, including pieces written by Bianca Spriggs ’03, Eric Sutherland, Kenan Visiting Writer and former Kentucky Poet Laureate Richard Taylor and fellow Transylvania professors Martha Gehringer and Jeremy Paden. The installation at LOT will also feature some of the discarded pieces of furniture and floor-to-ceiling drawings of the locations where the furniture was found.
