Transylvania University is showcasing the creative talents of Pioneers from a variety of majors in this year’s Juried Student Art Show.
The winners were announced during a reception last week in Morlan Gallery. The show runs through tomorrow.
“The exhibition has over 120 student works in a wide variety of mediums including painting, drawing, ceramics, photography, printmaking, video, animation, digital art and fibers,” according to gallery director Anthony Mead.
The winners include senior Caroline Cockrell, whose piece “The Internal Gambit” pictured below received the Dean’s Purchase Award. Each year, the honor spotlights an exceptional work that goes into the university’s permanent collection.

Rebecca Thomas, executive vice president for academic affairs and dean of the university, described Cockrell’s artwork as a “well-crafted sculpture and a functional object. Caroline’s visual depicts both the internal struggle of decision making while one maintains a visual exterior of stoicism. This ceramics sculpture contains within it the possibilities of critical decision making, conceptual inquiry and the joy of play that we hold dear in education and in life.”
Additionally, the Visual Art Committee Purchase Award went to Morgan Hardigree for “Wretch Leaves Home to Stop the Famine” and Sofia Ricketts for “Undead Bowl.”
This year’s Abbott Scholarship was awarded to Katie Woolcott in memory of Mildred and Harold Abbott, both patrons and practitioners in the visual and performing arts.
