GSA session enters its final week at Transylvania

LEXINGTON, Ky.—The Governor’s School for the Arts 2009 summer session comes to a close Saturday at Transylvania, highlighted by final student performances and graduation ceremonies. The final week will also feature an appearance by First Lady Jane Beshear on Tuesday. She will be on campus for a showcase performance at 1 p.m. Tuesday will also be College and Career Planning Day, with over a dozen colleges and universities on hand to meet with the GSA students. Tourism, Arts, and Heritage Cabinet Secretary Marcheta Sparrow is also scheduled to be on hand. The GSA will wrap up its 10th year on the Transy campus on Saturday, with final day-long performances in all disciplines preceding graduation ceremonies at 5:15 p.m. in Haggin Auditorium. Final performances, including those in instrumental and vocal music, musical theater, visual arts, drama, new media, and architecture, will begin at various campus locations at noon. All final day events are open to GSA parents, friends, and relatives as well as the public and media. Previous final day performances have attracted over 1,200 people to the Transy campus. Refreshments will be available at various campus locations near Old Morrison. 2009 Governor’s School for the Arts session opens June 21 at Transylvania

LEXINGTON, Ky.—A total of 225 of Kentucky’s best young artists from 51 counties will assemble on the Transylvania campus on Sunday, June 21, to begin the three-week 2009 session of the Governor’s School for the Arts. The latest GSA class is comprised of rising juniors and seniors from all corners of the Commonwealth who will receive rigorous training through daily seminars, master classes, lectures, hands-on workshops and field trips to various arts attractions in central Kentucky. The student-artists will receive instruction in a total of nine areas: including New Media, which was added in 2008, those disciplines are Architecture, Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Instrumental Music, Musical Theatre, Visual Arts and Vocal Music. Nearly 4,000 of the state’s most talented high school artists from all 120 counties have attended the 22-year-old GSA summer program following a challenging selection process. Each year since the program’s inception in 1987, over 1,500 students have applied annually for one of the available scholarships, valued at over $3,000. Currently, 20 colleges and universities, including Transylvania, offer scholarships to GSA alumni. The program will culminate on Saturday, July 11, with an all-day festival at Transy that celebrates the achievements of the young artists through performances that are open to family, friends and the public. Transylvania’s admissions and scholarship deadline extended to February 9

LEXINGTON, Ky.—Due to the inclement weather, school cancelations and power outages across Kentucky, we have extended our February 1 regular admission deadline to Monday, February 9. This new deadline is also the deadline for application for academic scholarships. Governor’s Scholars and Governor’s School for the Arts participants should submit their applications by February 9 in order to be eligible for GSP or GSA scholarships. This deadline also applies to students interested in music or studio art scholarships. Performances, graduation highlight GSA final day

LEXINGTON, Ky.—The Governor’s School for the Arts 2008 summer session came to a close Saturday at Transylvania, highlighted by final student performances and graduation ceremonies.  The GSA wrapped up its ninth year on the Transy campus with final day-long performances in all disciplines preceding graduation ceremonies in Haggin Auditorium. Final performances, including those in instrumental and vocal music, musical theater, visual arts, drama, new media and architecture, were held at various campus locations at 12:30. All final day events were open to GSA parents, friends and relatives as well as the public and media. Previous final day performances have attracted over 1,000 people to the Transy campus.   Final performances were held at the Mitchell Fine Arts Center, the Little Theater, the Shearer Art Building, the Haupt Humanities Building, Old Morrison and the Cowgill Center.   A total of 241 high school students from nearly 50 counties and about 85 high schools were on the Transylvania campus beginning June 22, immersed in a rigorous schedule of daily seminars, master classes, lectures, hands-on workshops and field trips to local arts attractions. 2008 Governor’s School for the Arts session begins Sunday, June 22

The latest GSA class includes 241 rising juniors and seniors from all corners of the Commonwealth, including 15 in a new discipline called “New Media,” which will focus on more recent forms of art communication, including animation, video production, and digital imagery. The student-artists will receive intense instruction in a total of nine areas. Along with New Media, those disciplines are Architecture, Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Instrumental Music, Musical Theatre, Visual Arts, and Vocal Music. Educational experience is gained through a variety of daily seminars, master-classes, lectures, hands-on workshops, and field trips to regional arts attractions. More than 3,500 of the state’s most talented high school artists from 120 counties have attended the 21-year-old GSA summer program following a challenging selection process.
