Chicago, Illinois.

What’s your favorite Lexington hangout?
Anyplace downtown–the night life downtown has been greatly enhanced in the past five years

Where do you go on campus when you need to get away from your office?
The Beck Center. It’s a great place to work out, play basketball and release some stress.

What’s something you’ve always wanted to try?
Skydiving. I had a chance about eight years ago, but it was too cloudy that day. I’d love the opportunity to try again.

Assistant Director of Admissions

Where are you from?
Lexington, Kentucky.

What’s your favorite Lexington hangout?
The patio of Malone’s in Hamburg Pavilion–you can enjoy your favorite sports, get a great meal and it’s not too loud to talk to your friends.

Where do you go on campus when you need to get away from your office?
I love to sit outside, and the new Alumni Plaza is a great place to enjoy the sunshine!

What’s something you’ve always wanted to try?
I wish I knew how to knit, so I could make awesome scarves.

What do you love about Transylvania?
I love the people, particularly my amazing colleagues.

Alice Schaaf

Assistant Director for International Admissions

Territories: International plus Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Washington, D.C.

Where are you from?

I was born in Lexington, but grew up in Brockport, New York, where I went to school from kindergarten through high school graduation. I came back to Lexington to attend Transy!

What’s your favorite Lexington hangout?

Sage Rabbit restaurant. Amazing food (you have to try the cinnamon rolls at Saturday brunch, and the daily chicken specials), dog-friendly patio, super staff.

Where have your international travels taken you?

I have visited 40 countries so far, including Cuba, Iceland, Australia and Russia. I have lived and worked in England and Japan, and absolutely loved both. My favorite trips include the Galapagos, and horse riding in southern Spain.

What do you love about Transylvania?

It has amazing programs and great spaces, in a perfect location to take advantage of all a progressive city like Lexington has to offer. Students can really have an impact on their campus, and their wider community.

Admissions Counselor

Territories: Southcentral Kentucky, East Tennessee, Georgia, West Virginia

Where are you from?
Glasgow, KY but I’ve been in Lexington quite a while now!

What’s your favorite Lexington hangout?
Lexington has so much to offer, it’s hard to name just one favorite hangout. My top choices are downtown/near downtown…Corto Lima, Mirror Twin (Rolling Oven Pizza!) on National Ave and Zim’s/The Thirsty Fox in the old (new) courthouse (especially on a snowy day).

Where do you go on campus when you need to get away from your office?
The french fries in the dining hall are life!

What’s something you’ve always wanted to try?
I’ve always wanted to stay at Blackberry Farm in Walland, TN so I’ll say that! It’s a luxury resort and one of the top rated properties in the world. I’m obsessed with it!!!

What do you love about Transylvania?
The historic architecture and overall campus vibe together with the genuine kindness of students and staff make for a great place to work! Transy charts the course for students’ lives and it’s so exciting to be a part of the experience!

Alex McConnell

amcconnell@transy.edu

Assistant Director of Admissions

Territories: Fayette and Woodford counties (Ky.), Alaska, Hawaii

Where are you from?
This has always been a hard question for me. I was born in Philadelphia, moved to Corbin, Ky., when I was 5, graduated from Madison Central High School in Richmond, Kentucky, and then moved to Lexington to attend Transy. In 2008 I moved to New Jersey, and in 2011 I moved to Hawaii. In March of 2013 my family and I moved back to Lexington. I guess I am from Richmond? No wait, Lexington?

What’s your favorite Lexington hangout?
I have a few, and my list continues to grow as more and more cool places open up! For food and drink — OBC, Harry’s, Cup of Commonwealth, Blue Door BBQ, Mirror Twin/Rolling Oven and PieTana!

Where do you go on campus when you need to get away from your office?
I like to take walks downtown when the weather is nice. I can walk to Henry A. Tandy Centennial Park. There are a handful of restaurants, coffee shops and offices along the route, so it is also a great way to people-watch.

What’s something you’ve always wanted to try?
Instead of trying something I would like to go to Paris, France. I need to see the Eiffel Tower and spend a few days at the Louvre.

What do you love about Transylvania?
The community. I talk about the importance of first-year students building their Transy community on the very first day they walk on campus. The communities are where you live, what activities you are a part of, your classmates, etc. They become your best friends, colleagues and even your spouse (shout out to my husband, Class of 1999!). Your community will help you be successful, keep you accountable and hold you responsible.

Julie Sams

jsams@transy.edu

Assistant Director of Admissions

Territories: Greater Louisville, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas

Where are you from?
Georgetown, Kentucky, but I also call North Carolina home after spending over seven years there.

What’s your favorite Lexington hangout?
Too many to choose! I participate in the West 6th Walk/Run Club and support other local businesses like Oscar Diggs, Blue Stallion, Buddha Lounge, etc. I also enjoy just being downtown with all the great activities and food options. I love food and love to talk about food (just ask my coworkers)!

Where do you go on campus when you need to get away from your office?
I enjoy walking through beautiful Gratz Park.

What’s something you’ve always wanted to try?
Skydiving! Although when faced with the jump I’m not 100 percent sure I would!

What do you love about Transylvania?
The people and the LOCATION! Transy is its own community, but within the heart of downtown Lexington. You’ll see students, faculty and staff on and off campus enjoying everything Transy and Lexington have to offer!

Where are you from?
Barberton, Ohio, the Magic City.

What’s your favorite Lexington hangout?
Third Street Stuff, the Legacy Trail and Half Price Books.

Where do you go on campus when you need to get away from your office?
Alumni Plaza! It’s so beautiful and easy to do work outside, and it doesn’t hurt that Gratz Perk is between my office and there.

What’s something you’ve always wanted to try?
A long-term hiking and camping experience. I love being outdoors, but I’d love to actually learn the basic survival skills to spend a week outside.

What do you love about Transylvania?
The lasting friendships have been incredible — not just with my classmates, but also with professors and staff. I know that I will always have this fantastic support network in the heart of Lexington.
