College students are invited to join Transylvania University and the Burren College of Art for a new, three-week summer program that will immerse them in Ireland’s rich tradition of art and literature.

Transylvania in Ireland includes courses taught by the university’s faculty along with local and regional experts in folklore, writing, music and dance. Based at Burren in County Clare, the program will also offer excursions to Galway, the Aran Islands, Doolin, the Cliffs of Moher and Dublin.

The course runs from May 31 to June 22, 2019. The deadline to apply is Nov. 26, 2018.

“The experience of traveling and studying overseas is an important part of a liberal arts education and something we want to offer our students through our partnership with the Burren College of Art,” Transylvania President Seamus Carey said. “The Transylvania in Ireland program is a unique opportunity to share in a culturally rich and engaging academic experience, open to not only our students but also those from other universities.”

Courses offered will include Introduction to Drawing, which will find inspiration in the Irish people and landscapes. Other classes are Space, Place, and the Irish Literary Imagination; and Special Topics in Studio Art.

Students in the Transylvania in Ireland program will earn up to two units of credit (eight semester hours). Also included are accommodations, local transportation, medical and travel insurance and two large group meals.

“The Transylvania in Ireland program represents an exciting new study-abroad opportunity for the university,” said Jack Girard, professor and program director. “Students will experience complete immersion in the Irish culture while pursuing coursework in art and literature and traveling to a variety of distinctive sites that will offer a romantically rich texture and cultural depth to this spirited adventure.”

Through promoting study abroad, Transylvania enables students to learn in unfamiliar settings among people with different backgrounds, helping them better understand themselves and the wider world.
