Appalachian Regional Healthcare and Transylvania University have teamed up to offer students from Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia valuable scholarships, educational opportunities and a guaranteed job after graduation. The deadline for the first scholarship awards application is now Jan. 1.

“We are excited that through this partnership we will be able to offer students from our service areas who are pursuing health care degrees at Transy the opportunity to return home to the areas they are from to make a difference in patients’ lives while enjoying a career with ARH,” said Hollie Phillips, ARH president and CEO.

The program is open to prospective students from counties in Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia in the ARH service area interested in working in health care as practitioners or in administrative roles. ARH owns 13 hospitals in the following areas:

  • Big Sandy Region: Martin, Prestonsburg, McDowell, West Liberty and South Williamson
  • Cumberland Valley Region: Barbourville, Harlan and Middlesboro
  • KY River Region: Hazard, Hyden and Whitesburg
  • West Virginia Region: Beckley and Hinton

Students with an interest in a variety of fields are encouraged to apply, including:

  • Pre-medicine
  • Pre-pharmacy
  • Pre-physical therapy
  • Computer science
  • Accounting
  • Business management
  • Social services
  • Other pre-health areas (OT, speech therapy, etc.)

Students selected for the scholarship program may receive up to $15,000 over four years — in addition to qualifying for other merit and need-based aid. They will also have access to experiential learning opportunities during their undergraduate studies in the form of summer work, mentorships and internships with ARH.

Recipients of the scholarship must agree to return to Appalachia following graduation from Transylvania, or following the completion of graduate or professional degrees. Graduates will be expected to work for ARH for a minimum of three years.

Current high school seniors interested in the Transylvania/ARH scholarship for fall 2022 must apply for admission to Transylvania by Dec. 1 for priority scholarship consideration and complete the ARH form by Jan. 1. Those who have already applied or been admitted, as well as current students, need only submit the inquiry form by Jan. 1. Get more details and fill out the inquiry form at transy.edu/arh.
