New Transylvania Campus Center to start taking shape

Construction site

The steel frame of Transylvania University’s new Campus Center will soon rise from the construction site along North Broadway.

Work is proceeding on schedule for a fall 2020 opening. So far, workers have been focused on the lower level of the $30-million facility. Footings — which will help support the structure — and the basement’s concrete walls are expected to be finished by August. Also, lower-level plumbing installation is underway, and the construction site’s storm sewer work along Broadway is complete.

Workers will begin erecting the building’s aboveground steel frame by the beginning of next month. Additionally, interior demolition of the existing William T. Young Campus Center will start by Aug. 5. The new, 97,710-square-foot Campus Center will have 61,400 square feet of new construction and 36,310 square feet of space renovated from the old building.

The new facility will include event spaces for the Transylvania community and outside groups, a fitness center, classrooms, and dining areas like the Great Hall, which will seat up to 450 and remain open 24/7 as a place for students to gather.
