Spoken word poetry takes spotlight in Transylvania discussion

Weinstein Creative Intelligence Series

A nationally recognized scholar on spoken word poetry leads a discussion titled “Forms of (R)Evolution: Spoken Word Poetry, Civility and Cultural Change” on Thursday, Nov. 8, as part of Transylvania’s Creative Intelligence Series.

The free, public talk will be at 4:30 in the Cowgill Center for Business, Economics, and Education, Room 102.

Susan Weinstein, a professor at Louisiana State University, will offer a brief history of spoken word poetry and discuss how artistic subcultures reflect generational and cultural shifts in society.

Weinstein is an associate professor of English at LSU, where she teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in English education, ethnographic research methods, literacy studies, social contexts of poetry and hip-hop studies.

Through her professional work, Weinstein brings forward the largely unheard voices of young people making spoken word art.

“The 2018-19 Creative Intelligence series features artists, scholars and media makers who crack open the concept of civility in dynamic and unexpected ways,” said Zoé Strecker, an art professor and director of Creative Intelligence and special academic programming.

Transy’s Creative Intelligence events are part of the university’s New Frontiers season, which asks us to go beyond the familiar and explore ideas, art and music.
