Transylvania offers financial aid estimates to incoming students as FAFSA delays continue

Transylvania is making some changes to its typical financial aid processes for incoming students due to ongoing nationwide struggles with the 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid — colloquially known as the FAFSA.

This year, admitted incoming students and their families may request an aid estimate from the Office of Financial Aid. While these estimates are not a guarantee of federal or state aid eligibility, the hope is that they will serve as approximations of the amount of aid a student can expect to receive once their FAFSA data is made available to the Transylvania financial aid staff.

“I am grateful for the team’s work to support our families and the university,” said Rhyan Conyers, Transylvania’s vice president for institutional effectiveness, adding that the goal is to return estimates to families who request them within 3-5 business days of their request form submission.

Estimates will include a student’s approximated financial aid eligibility, including all finalized Transylvania aid as well as the team’s best calculation of federal and state aid eligibility. The estimates for federal and state aid will be based directly on the information families submit via the online net price calculator.

The estimates will also include a student’s potential out-of-pocket costs for the 2024-25 academic year — both with and without federal student loans.

“Our aim is to provide students and families with a realistic idea of what financial aid they can expect and how that aid can offset their cost to attend Transylvania,” said Jennifer Cosens, Transylvania’s director of financial aid. “The format for these estimates is fairly similar to that of our official financial aid offer, and we hope this preview will help students be more informed and prepared when we are able to provide official offers in the coming weeks.”

In order to give families additional time to make their final college choice, Transylvania has also opted to remove incentives for early deposits. May 1 is the university’s current deposit deadline.

Incoming students who have been admitted to Transylvania beginning fall 2024 should check their email for more information.
