Transylvania University pre-health students made the most of summer break, diving into research, internships and shadowing opportunities.

The practical skills they learned will complement their academic studies while giving them an advantage when applying to professional or graduate school.

“At Transy, we connect pre-health students to opportunities and experiences that will not only help them gain information about health professions, but that will also make them competitive at the next level,” pre-health adviser Robin Prichard said.

For instance, seniors Maria Hayes (pictured below) and Kaycee Moore participated in the Kentucky IDeA Network for Biomedical Research Excellence Summer Undergraduate Research Program. Hayes, who plans to pursue genetic counseling, and Moore, who’s applying to optometry programs, both gained valuable biomedical research experience under the supervision of faculty mentors.

Additionally, junior John-Paul Craig (top photo), who plans to apply to medical school, spent his summer interning at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. He spent many hours observing in an operating room and contributed to research projects. “I am extremely grateful to have had this opportunity and am leaving even more excited about medicine,” Craig said.

Another Transylvania student, Aiden Dunigan (pictured below along with alum Jack Dodds ’24), went all out this summer. He participated in both the UofL School of Medicine’s rural scholar program and the UK Professional Education Preparation Program. These essential shadowing opportunities helped give him a clearer picture of the path to becoming a physician.
