Transylvania partners with UK on pre-med, pre-pharmacy programs

LEXINGTON, Ky.—Transylvania University has launched two partnerships with the University of Kentucky that give students an inside track to graduate school at the College of Pharmacy and the College of Medicine-Northern Kentucky Campus.

Transylvania’s Early Assurance Program partnership with the University of Kentucky College of Medicine-Northern Kentucky Campus reserves spots for Transylvania pre-med students at the new northern Kentucky campus.

Up to three students will receive assured admission to the College of Medicine-Northern Kentucky Campus upon graduation from Transylvania (pending completion of all requirements). Candidates will apply with and be selected by a Transylvania committee for review by the UK College of Medicine. One Transy student has already been accepted to the Northern Kentucky campus through the partnership.

The Early Assurance Program will also grant students enrichment experiences while at Transylvania. Activities include exposure to hospital and office practice; shadowing and mentoring experiences with physicians; academic advising at Transy; targeted research, seminar and course experiences; MCAT preparation; and a one-week boot camp in northern Kentucky.

“These are incredible opportunities for our students to receive Transylvania’s top-ranked liberal arts experience, coupled with a direct pathway to graduate education in medicine and pharmacy,” said Vice President and Dean of the University Laura Bryan. “They will enjoy the benefits of one-on-one interactions with faculty and personal attention at Transy along with the resources of a research-intensive University of Kentucky.”

Transylvania’s pre-med graduates have historically shown great success—approximately 90 percent of students Transy has recommended to medical school have been accepted.

The partnership with the College of Pharmacy allows students to earn a bachelor’s degree from Transylvania and a Pharm.D. from the University of Kentucky. After completing Transylvania’s general education requirements in three years, students can, upon acceptance, go on to pharmacy school at UK, where they can earn their Pharm.D. in as little as four years. Nine of those credit hours will transfer back to Transylvania, and students will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts in liberal studies.

“It’s an exciting time to be a pre-health student at Transy,” said Robin Prichard, coordinator of pre-health preparation programs at Transylvania. “They truly get the best of both worlds, experiencing Transy’s special community and then attending one of the nation’s top pharmacy schools.”
