The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Music and Lyrics by. William Finn. Book by. Rachel Sheinkin.
Directed by Derrick Ledbetter
Musical Direction by Brent Merritt
Wednesday, Nov. 19 – Sunday Nov. 23, 2025

About the Play

Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience.

An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box.

Metamorphosis: based on the myths by Ovid

By Mary Zimmerman
Directed by Tosha Fowler
Wednesday, Feb. 25 – Sunday, March 2, 2026

About the Play

Called by Time the “theater event of the year,” Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses brings Ovid’s tales to stunning visual life. The play juxtaposes the ancient and the contemporary in both language and image to reflect the variety and persistence of narrative in the face of inevitable change. Nominated for three 2002 Tony Awards, including Best Play. Director Tosha Fowler will be reconceptualizing the play’s large pool setting into a new and fresher take on what has now become an American Classic.

Art of Storytelling: Study Abroad in London May Term 2026

Travel with Tosha Fowler & Melissa Gilbert to see theater in London & Stratford-Upon-Avon! Art of Storytelling is a GE Fine Arts course.
