Remembering those who served this Valentine’s Day

Transy students create Valentines for veterans.

Giving back to the community and remembering those who served—that’s how one group of Transylvania students spent a recent Friday night. A group of Transy resident advisors gathered together with students to handcraft Valentine’s Day cards for local veterans.

“In high school a volunteer organization I was a part of made Veterans Day cards and delivered them to the local VA hospital,” said sophomore Caroline Hawk. She helped organize the group to create cards for this week’s holiday.  “I thought it would be a good way to bring the Transy community together and a great service opportunity as well.”

Hawk connected with a local veterans service organization, Lady Veterans Connect, because of the work they do to support women veterans experiencing homelessness.

“With the help of my fellow RAs, we were able to put together this event, in which almost 40 cards were made,” Hawk said.

“Acts of kindness and generosity such as this encourage our lady veterans that there are people that recognize and honor them for their service to our country,” said Phyllis Abbott, executive director of the veterans group. “Lady Veterans Connects wants to thank the Transylvania students that took time from their busy schedules to make these beautiful, inspiring Valentine cards to be shared with our lady veterans.”

“I hope come Valentine’s Day these women heroes, who have given so much to our freedom, will feel honored and loved by the simple gestures of students on our campus,” Hawk said.
