When you visit the Writing Center<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We, the Transylvania University Writing Center staff, value collaboration, respect, and interdisciplinary engagement as we work with patrons to develop writing skills and cultivate confidence that will make not only for better writing, but for better writers. Whether you are new to the Writing Center, a frequent visitor, or anything in between, please find below the sets of expectations that guide each and every session that takes place. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

At the Writing Center, we can<\/mark>\u2026<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\n
\n

Consult<\/mark><\/em> with you on any kind of writing \u2014 for example, essays, lab reports, presentations, research proposals, applications, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Examine<\/mark><\/em> an assignment prompt with you in order to understand the assignment\u2019s expectations and goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Help<\/mark><\/em> you to develop editing and proofreading skills, as well as a familiarity with citation styles such as MLA, APA, and Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collaborate<\/mark><\/em> with you to improve the organization, style, tone, and clarity of a draft as you work towards the final product.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

Provide<\/em><\/mark>\u00a0and\u00a0implement<\/em><\/mark> brainstorming strategies to use as you approach an assignment and work to identify, narrow, or broaden your writing topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bHelp<\/mark><\/em> you to construct a well-supported argument with a thesis and evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Create<\/mark><\/em> an action plan that will help you achieve writing goals outside of the Writing Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bHelp<\/mark><\/em> you understand instructor feedback and implement suggested changes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Assist<\/mark><\/em> you with searching for and identifying useful sources, as well as paraphrasing, summarizing, quoting, and responding to those sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bWork<\/mark><\/em> with you to develop skills and strategies that will bring you greater confidence as a writer, researcher, and thinker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advise<\/mark><\/em> you at any point in the writing process, from brainstorming to outlining to drafting to revising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bDirect<\/mark><\/em> you to other academic resources such as the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), library staff, and learning skills specialists<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

At the Writing Center, we can\u2019t<\/mark>\u2026<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Write<\/mark><\/em> any portion of your paper. The Writing Center adheres to Transy\u2019s policy on academic integrity<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bEnsure<\/em><\/mark>\u00a0that all the work required to complete an assignment will be accomplished in a single session.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

Guarantee<\/mark><\/em> that a writing center consultation will improve the grade an assignment earns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bEvaluate<\/mark><\/em> a professor\u2019s assignment or comment on the grade a paper should receive<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

Promise<\/mark><\/em> to catch every single error, though we will help you develop strategies to avoid them in your writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bTutor<\/mark><\/em> you in course content. (For help with course content, please visit our neighbors in the ACE Tutoring.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

We expect our patrons to:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Maintain a respectful attitude<\/mark><\/em> towards TUWC staff and other TUWC patrons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bCollaborate<\/em><\/mark>\u00a0and\u00a0engage<\/em>\u00a0in productive dialogue with the staffer throughout the entire session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bUse technology<\/mark><\/em> (laptops, cell phones, etc.) only as relevant to the work of the session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bCome prepared\u00a0to the session<\/em><\/mark>\u00a0with the assignment prompt, along with other available and relevant materials, to help the staffer understand the assignment.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bRespect staffers\u2019 time<\/mark><\/em> by booking (and canceling if necessary) appointments at least one hour prior to the appointment time, arriving punctually, and adhering to the time parameters of the appointment as booked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bHave a sense of priority<\/mark><\/em> when bringing multiple assignments to one session, as working on one assignment may take up the entire session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bGain verbal consent<\/em><\/mark>\u00a0from the staffer to record a session.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

Patrons can expect our staffers to:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Maintain a respectful attitude<\/mark><\/em> towards TUWC patrons and other TUWC staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bCollaborate<\/mark> and engage<\/em> in productive dialogue with the patron throughout the entire session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bUse technology<\/mark><\/em> (laptops, cell phones, etc.) only as relevant to the work of the session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Offer feedback<\/mark><\/em> to patrons that is always constructive and respectful, never harsh or demeaning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bRespect patrons\u2019 time<\/mark><\/em> by arriving punctually and adhering to the time parameters of the appointment as booked. A staffer will only cancel an appointment in the case of an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bPrioritize higher-order concerns<\/mark><\/em> (organization, structure, development of ideas) over lower-order (grammar, spelling).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
