In Japan, people answer the phone by saying &#8220;moshi moshi,&#8221; and the caller responds with the same phrase. According to folklore, foxes cannot say &#8220;moshi,&#8221; and ghosts cannot say it twice, making the greeting a way to ward off trickster spirits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Josh Morris \u201909 and Mallory Morris \u201909, Transylvania University alumni and owners of Ghost Fox Winery, spent three years in Japan, where their passion for winemaking began to take shape. When it came time to name their winery, they wanted to honor that formative experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"From chemistry to community: Transylvania alumni build Ghost Fox Winery\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RvUS2LIXo3M?feature=oembed&rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a very pivotal point in our lives,\u201d Josh said. \u201cWe thought that was kind of a cute way of paying homage to our beginnings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mallory\u2019s journey into winemaking began while she was a student at Transylvania, where she pursued a chemistry degree. Although she didn\u2019t initially plan to focus on wine, it became a key part of her academic and personal interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI got a job at a winery as a wine chemist my junior year,\u201d Mallory said. \u201cThat was the perfect fit for me \u2014 it combined my chemistry background with my growing interest in wine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduating from Transylvania, Mallory pursued a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at Florida State University, guided by professor John Dorsey \u201973, a fellow Transylvania alum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI realized that wine was something I always came back to, even though my career was focused on chemistry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Josh and Mallory first met at Transylvania while running on the cross country team. They spent all four years as friends before getting married after graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\">\n<p>I always think that we\u2019re unique, but we\u2019re not. There are so many couples who found each other at Transylvania, and I think that\u2019s really special.<\/p>\n<cite>Mallory Morris<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on their relationship, Mallory said, \u201cI always think that we\u2019re unique, but we\u2019re not. There are so many couples who found each other at Transylvania, and I think that\u2019s really special.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Mallory pursued her Ph.D., Josh worked at a hospital in Florida, aiming to break into the mental health field. Later, when the couple relocated to Maryland, Josh transitioned into winemaking, taking a job as a vineyard manager despite having no prior experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was hired as a vineyard manager at Frederick Cellars Winery,\u201d Josh said. \u201cNo experience, but I had great guidance, and I figured things out as I went along.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Josh\u2019s role expanded as he learned the intricacies of vineyard management, eventually taking on assistant winemaking duties. It was during this time that his passion for wine began to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Josh then enlisted in the military, serving for nine years. His military career took the couple to California and later to Japan. The COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted countless lives and careers, motivated Josh and Mallory to turn their winemaking hobby into a full-fledged business. They launched Ghost Fox Winery in a 600-square-foot space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a retirement dream,\u201d Josh said. \u201cBut we realized, why wait another 20 or 30 years? Let\u2019s do it now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nicholasville winery was born from their shared passion and desire to create something meaningful. For Josh and Mallory, perseverance has been key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are setbacks, and some are more expensive than others,\u201d Josh said. \u201cYou just have to keep going. You\u2019ve got to have confidence in your product and make adjustments as you go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The couple credits their success in part to the support of family, friends and the Transylvania alumni community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had so many people cheering us on, telling us we were doing something good,\u201d Mallory said. \u201cWithout that support, I don\u2019t know if we would have had the courage to take the leap.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Josh and Mallory have hosted alumni events at their winery and frequently connect with fellow Transylvania graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve met so many Transy alumni who have become customers and friends,\u201d Mallory said. \u201cIt\u2019s been amazing to see how the Transy community has embraced what we\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we moved back to Kentucky, the Transy community welcomed us with open arms,\u201d Josh added. \u201cAlumni reached out to visit the winery or offer support. It\u2019s a tight-knit community, and that connection has been invaluable for us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Mallory, her liberal arts education at Transylvania played a significant role in preparing her to juggle multiple responsibilities as a small business owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTransy gave me the foundation to do things I never imagined I would be doing,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t think either of us were innately bold people before we went to Transylvania, but here we are, taking this leap.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Josh encourages others to take similar risks in pursuing their dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have to take a leap,\u201d he said. \u201cDon\u2019t wait for the \u2018perfect\u2019 time or for everything to be in place. Start small, learn as you go and trust that it will grow if you believe in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"
