From the President

As we near the end of 2023, I am filled with gratitude for the continued support and engagement of our incredible community of alumni and donors. Thanks to you, Transylvania University continues to thrive and foster transformative learning experiences for today’s students.

Our commitment to academic excellence continues to be the cornerstone of a Transylvania education. Recognitions and awards like the Bingham Fund’s teaching excellence grant, the prestigious Teagle Foundation/NEH grant and the Leading Colleges Award for Social Justice, affirm our dedication to providing a strong liberal arts foundation for tomorrow’s leaders.

We know that learning happens both in and out of the classroom, and we work to ensure that our students are exposed to a range of diverse learning opportunities and perspectives. Through our William R. Kenan Jr. Lecture series, our students have the opportunity to hear from notable writers and speakers like bestselling author Imani Perry and journalist Ed Yong. Many of our students had the opportunity to experience the big game in Dallas this year as our women’s basketball team won the NCAA Division III title. And our fraternity and sorority life on campus has recently been enriched by the addition of two of the “Divine Nine” fraternities and sororities to Transylvania — Kappa Alpha Psi and Sigma Gamma Rho.

Looking ahead, initiatives like the Bingham Center for Teaching Excellence and our collaborative graduate partnerships reinforce our commitment to advancing education in the 21st century. The generosity of our supporters, exemplified by transformative gifts such as endowed professorships in mathematics and English or theater, underscores the profound impact of mentorship and dedication within our university community.

As we conclude one year and anticipate the next, we continue to pass on the light. I hope we can also continue to partner in supporting Transylvania in the coming year. Best wishes for health and happiness in 2024!

In Pioneer spirit,

Brien Lewis
