Transylvania to remain virtual for learning and work through Friday, Jan. 30

Due to the continued impact of winter weather, Transylvania University will remain in virtual learning and remote work status for the remainder of the week, from Wednesday, Jan. 28, through Friday, Jan. 30.

Facilities staff have been working diligently to manage snow and ice removal across campus. Initial efforts focused on residential areas to ensure student safety and access to dining services, and work is continuing on the academic side of campus. Crews are currently addressing snow and ice buildup at academic building entrances. While all sidewalks have been plowed at least once and treated with de‑icer, many areas remain uneven and icy.

Due to extremely low temperatures and the significant amount of ice present, Facilities will need the remainder of the week to adequately clear walkways and parking lots to a safe condition. Refreezing continues to occur despite ongoing efforts. Safety remains the top priority as our Facilities staff continue to work under challenging conditions.

The situation is being assessed regularly, with the expectation that regular campus operations will resume Monday. Additional communication will be shared as needed.

Campus impacts

  • Students will receive information from their faculty regarding class arrangements.
  • Staff members who are not designated as essential should coordinate with their supervisors regarding remote work expectations.
  • Essential personnel are expected to report as scheduled.
  • Dining Services will continue to operate in a limited capacity offering brunch and dinner daily to ensure residential students have reliable access to meals.
  • The library will remain closed on Wednesday. Reach out to librarians at library@transy.edu for virtual assistance.
  • The Beck Fitness Center will be open to on‑campus students during regular hours for the rest of the week.
  • The women’s and men’s basketball games have been moved to Berea College. The women will tip off at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.
  • All university events scheduled through Friday, Jan. 30, are canceled.

Winter weather precautions

  • Close all windows when leaving campus offices or residence hall rooms to help retain heat and prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Use caution when moving around campus by watching for icy walkways, allowing extra time for travel and remaining alert to changing conditions.
  • The parking area behind Hazelrigg is designated high risk during severe weather due to falling ice and will be marked “Park at Your Own Risk.” Transylvania is not responsible for vehicle damage in this area.

We are deeply grateful to our Facilities staff, who are working tirelessly to clear campus under challenging conditions. We also appreciate our Student Life, Dining Services and DPS teams for their dedication to maintaining operations during these difficult circumstances. We encourage everyone to extend their thanks to these dedicated teams for their continued efforts.

Stay warm and take care.
