Transylvania Moving to Virtual Learning and Work — Monday, Jan. 26

Due to anticipated weather conditions, Transylvania will move to virtual learning and remote work Monday, Jan. 26.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Lexington and much of the surrounding area for Saturday and Sunday, with heavy snowfall expected and Arctic air forecast early next week.

Facilities staff have been actively monitoring the situation and coordinating resources. Following consultation with university leadership and Lexington emergency management officials, the decision has been made to move to virtual operations to provide faculty, staff and students time to plan and to allow Facilities staff to safely clear campus after the storm.

Campus impacts

  • Students will receive information from their faculty regarding class arrangements.
  • Staff members who are not designated as essential should coordinate with their supervisors regarding remote work expectations.
  • Essential personnel are expected to report as scheduled.
  • Dining Services will operate in a limited capacity to ensure residential students have reliable access to meals throughout the weekend and Monday.
  • The library will be closed Sunday and Monday. Reach out to librarians at library@transy.edu for virtual assistance.
  • The Beck Fitness Center will be open Saturday morning from 10 a.m.‑1 p.m. The Fitness Center will be closed Monday morning. A decision on Monday regarding afternoon access will be made that morning.
  • All other university events scheduled for Monday are canceled.

The situation will be assessed Monday for potential impact Tuesday, and additional communication will be shared as needed.

Please note:

  • Close all windows when leaving campus offices or residence hall rooms to help retain heat and prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Use caution when moving around campus by watching for icy walkways, allowing extra time for travel and remaining alert to changing conditions.
  • The parking area behind Hazelrigg is designated high risk during severe weather due to falling ice and will be marked “Park at Your Own Risk.” Transylvania is not responsible for vehicle damage in this area.

Thank you for helping keep our campus safe and prepared this winter.
