{"id":314,"date":"2024-08-09T11:47:02","date_gmt":"2024-08-09T15:47:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/career-development\/?page_id=314"},"modified":"2026-01-29T10:24:34","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T15:24:34","slug":"writing-a-resume","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/career-development\/resources\/writing-a-resume\/","title":{"rendered":"Writing a R\u00e9sum\u00e9"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-crimson-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-09f46f4d08f7776d6eb816f9bc791614\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">A How-to Guide<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-goals-for-resume-writing\">Goals for R\u00e9sum\u00e9 Writing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-goal-one-understanding-your-abilities\">Goal One: Understanding your Abilities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A r\u00e9sum\u00e9 is the final outcome of a process that begins with you taking stock of the abilities you possess<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The more abilities that you are aware of possessing, the greater value you have to offer to an employer or graduate school<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowing your abilities and understanding from where you acquired them will make you more confident as an applicant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-goal-two-articulating-your-abilities\">Goal Two: Articulating your Abilities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Knowing your abilities helps you; articulating them effectively shows you can help the reader\/employer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never assume the reader knows what you mean; you must always be clear, concise, and use examples<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employers will only give your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 a 5-10 second review before making an initial decision, so excellent writing is imperative<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the writing on your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 is not good enough for Transy faculty, it is not good enough to send out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-drafting-the-general-resume\">Drafting the General R\u00e9sum\u00e9<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-first-step-don-t-worry-about-page-length\">First Step: Don\u2019t worry about page length!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Yes, you will ultimately be limited to a one page application resume to apply for a job or internship or 2 pages if you are applying to graduate or professional school, but you are not creating that r\u00e9sum\u00e9 yet!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The General R\u00e9sum\u00e9 can be as long as you need it to capture all of your good experiences and document the skills from them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-second-step-list-and-categorize-all-of-your-experiences\">Second Step: List and Categorize all of your experiences!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do Not Use a Template to create your r\u00e9sum\u00e9! Use a blank Word or Google Doc<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose a style you like to format your r\u00e9sum\u00e9. It does not have to be complicated, however it does need to be consistent across every experience you include.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cAll of your experiences\u201d include jobs, internships, shadowing, volunteer\/community service, club and organization involvement, athletics, study abroad, and classes. Yes, classes can go on r\u00e9sum\u00e9s!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First years and sophomores may include relevant experiences from high school; juniors and seniors should include only college experiences unless a high school experience directly relates to the position you are seeking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Examples of categories include Education, Campus Involvement, Volunteer Work, Work History, Internships, Professional Experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-third-step-define-the-skills-you-acquired-and-the-accomplishments-you-achieved\">Third Step: Define the Skills you acquired and the Accomplishments you achieved<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use \u201cAction Words\u201d found on the next page to define the skills you acquired<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do Not focus on the day to day job duties such as \u201ccopying, answering phones, etc.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep the statements concise, but provide sufficient information to give context<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whenever possible, describe the positive impact you contributed to the position<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use numbers or amounts whenever possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use the appropriate tense of the verb\u2014past or present, but don\u2019t use \u201cing\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid statements such as, \u201cresponsibilities or duties include,\u201d as these are passive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do Not use personal pronouns (i.e. I, We, Us)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use more statements if the experience provided many skills; use fewer if it did not<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remember,
