Role of Disability Services
As a liberal arts university, the employees at Transylvania University recognize and appreciate the value of multiple intelligence. The Disability Services Office, TU professors, as well as the Dean and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs communicate to discuss best practices and teaching strategies in order to create an optimal learning environment for all students. Because we recognize that higher education encompasses more than just academic experiences, DSO maintains a close working relationship with the Coordinator of Title IX, the Department of Student Wellbeing, Residential Life, the Athletics Department, and Career Development.
The Disability Services Office is committed to helping students at Transylvania University reach their individual and academic goals. We recognize our responsibility to provide equal access to opportunities for persons with disabilities under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and the Amendments Act of 2009.
Definition of a Disability
As outlined in the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), a student with a disability is defined as anyone with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities such as walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, or learning, as well as many others.
In addition to those who may have visible disabilities, the definition includes those with a range of non-visible disabilities. These include but are not limited to psychological issues, learning differences, or chronic health impairments such as epilepsy, diabetes, lupus, cancer, HIV/AIDS and more.
Faculty or staff members who have a disability and who wish to seek reasonable accommodations should contact the Department of Human Resources.
