Fraternity & Sorority Life at Transylvania University

Come curious. Leave inspired.

At Transy, fraternity and sorority life is more than letters on a T-shirt — it’s a chance to grow, lead, give back and make the kind of friendships that last well beyond graduation. Whether you’re looking to get involved, find your community or just make the most of your college experience, you’ll find your place in one of our eight national chapters.

The Four Pillars of Greek Life

Academics
We take our studies seriously — and we help each other stay on track. Whether it’s group study nights, academic mentoring or just having friends who remind you it’s time to finish that paper, our chapters are here to support your goals.

Friendship
This is the good stuff. Movie nights, spontaneous ice cream runs, road trips, inside jokes that make no sense to anyone else — Greek life is where real friendships are built and memories are made.

Leadership
Step up, speak out and make things happen. You’ll have opportunities to lead events, serve on executive boards, mentor new members and represent your chapter across campus and beyond. Confidence? Consider it built.

Service
We believe in giving back — and we don’t just talk about it. From local nonprofits to national causes, every chapter rolls up its sleeves and gets involved. Service is part of who we are.

Meet the Councils

Three student-led councils keep things organized, supportive and exciting behind the scenes.

Interfraternity Council (IFC)

The IFC works with our national fraternities to support leadership, plan events and guide recruitment. If you’re considering joining a fraternity, this is the team that helps you get started.

Panhellenic Council

Our Panhellenic Council brings sororities together to collaborate, lead and support each other. They plan recruitment, host events and make sure every member has a strong foundation for success.

National Pan-Hellenic Council

In fall 2022, Transylvania University welcomed its first historically Black Greek-letter organization, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. By spring 2023, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. also joined the community. These additions expand Fraternity and Sorority Life’s outreach and create opportunities for more students to see themselves reflected in the fraternity and sorority experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time does it take to be involved in Greek life?

Most members spend around two to four hours a week on chapter meetings, service projects and events. It might get a little busier during recruitment or if you take on a leadership role, but students in FSL are also involved in clubs, athletics and academics—and they balance it all.

Does Transy allow hazing?

No. Hazing is illegal, against university policy and absolutely not part of the Transy experience. We take a zero-tolerance approach and require education to help all members build a culture of respect, inclusion and accountability.

Why should I join Fraternity and Sorority Life?

Because it adds so much to your college experience. You’ll gain leadership experience, make lifelong friends, support great causes and join a network that lasts long after graduation. With about 40% of students involved, Greek life is a big part of the fun and support you’ll find on campus.

Who can join?

First-year students, sophomores, transfers and upper-level students are all welcome! Whether you’re brand new to campus or looking to get more involved, there’s a place for you.

What should I think about before joining?

Every chapter has its own personality. Look at their values, service work, academic focus and overall vibe. Choose the group that feels like a true fit—where you feel supported and can grow.

What is the NPHC, and how is it part of Transy?

Transy has active chapters of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. We also partner closely with the University of Kentucky’s NPHC organizations, creating a strong, city-wide community rooted in tradition, culture and purpose.

How can my family support me if I join?

Families can be amazing cheerleaders. They can support you by asking questions, helping you manage time and finances, and getting involved in events like Family Weekend. Their encouragement makes a big difference.

Hazing Prevention

Let’s be clear: hazing has no place here. At Transylvania, we’re committed to creating safe, respectful and positive experiences for every student. Our chapters receive training on hazing prevention and reporting, and we provide clear policies and resources to support a strong, healthy community.
