Alumni Affinity Groups

An alumni affinity group is a community of Transylvania alumni who may live in the same area or share common interests, professions, identities or student experiences.

How Groups Work

  • Alumni-led: Groups are led by alumni who work with a staff liaison.
  • Stay connected: Regional groups may have a Facebook group page or career/professional groups may have a LinkedIn page, moderated by alumni leaders.
  • Events: Regional groups host events in person throughout the year with the option to hold additional gatherings online. Some groups may host events during Alumni Weekend.
  • Support: The alumni office provides promotion, event support, and connection tools (e.g., Google folders, contact lists).

Types of Affinity Groups

Regional Groups
Alumni who live in the same city or region.
Contact by email: Central Kentucky, Louisville, Cincinnati/Northern KY, Nashville, Washington DC, Indianapolis

Identity Groups
Alumni connected by a shared identity but all are welcome.
Contact by email:  LGBTQ+, Black Alumni

Student Organization Groups
Alumni who were part of the same student organizations.
Contact by email: Choir, band/orchestra, the Writing Center, William T. Young Scholars.

Career/Professional Groups
Alumni in similar professions.
Contact by email: Accounting, pre-law, pre-health

Interest Groups
Alumni-led and programmed groups with shared hobbies or passions.
Examples: Book Club, Wine Club, Bourbon Lovers, Tech Enthusiasts, Fitness Enthusiasts, Alumni Entrepreneurs.

What is an alumni affinity group?

A community of Transylvania alumni who connect by location, identity, profession, student organizations or shared interests.

How do Regional Alumni Groups work?

Regions with 500+ alumni have 10+ volunteer leaders and one annual event coordinated by the alumni office; smaller regions have 3–5 leaders and one event every other year coordinated by the alumni office. Leaders may plan additional activities.

What tools do Regional Groups use?

Each regional group has a Facebook group page (moderated by leaders) and a Google folder for resources. 

Which regions currently have groups?

Central Kentucky, Louisville, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, Nashville, Washington, D.C. and Indianapolis.

What are Alumni Identity Groups?

Groups led by alumni with a shared identity, such as LGBTQ+ or Black Alumni. They host an event at Alumni Weekend and may organize additional events, often online.

What are Student Organization Affinity Groups?

Groups of alumni from the same student organizations, such as choir, band/orchestra, or the Writing Center. They may hold events during Alumni Weekend and occasionally online.

How do Career/Professional Groups work?

Groups are led by an advancement staff liaison and/or a faculty liaison. They connect on LinkedIn, may host an Alumni Weekend event or other events in person or online, and serve as resources for current students. 

What are Alumni Interest Groups?

Less formal groups of alumni with shared hobbies. These groups are led and programmed by alumni and the alumni office will provide guidance and assist with promotion.Current examples include the Alumni Book Club, Wine Club, Bourbon Lovers, Tech Enthusiasts, Fitness Enthusiasts and Alumni Entrepreneurs.
