Using these strategies may actually lessen the time you spend reading!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pre-reading\">Pre-reading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Set up your environment<\/strong>. Consider lighting, noise, and location<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Get to know the text<\/strong>. Skim the text\u2019s introduction or summary, headings\/subheadings, key terms, graphics, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Define your purpose<\/strong>. Turn headings into questions. For example, the heading \u201cInternal Receptors\u201d is in a biology chapter about cell communication. You can turn the heading into \u201cWhere in the cell are internal receptors?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Divide the chapter(s) into manageable sections<\/strong> Take a short break between large headings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reading\">Reading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Paraphrase the text or take notes<\/strong> after each paragraph, stop and summarize what you just read<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Answer<\/strong> embedded questions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mark the text with symbols<\/strong> to track your thinking. <br>Examples of things you might want to mark include:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Confusing concepts (question mark)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Important (star)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Key terms (underline or highlight)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mastered concept (checkmark)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cycle or process (arrows in a circle)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Record your thoughts<\/strong> in the margins or your notes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-post-reading\">Post-reading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Answer<\/strong> self-created heading questions, book questions, and homework questions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outline<\/strong> big ideas and supporting details in your own words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Make a concept map<\/strong> to illustrate relationships and connections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Solve example problems<\/strong> Write clear explanations at each step<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Combine and connect<\/strong> reading notes and lecture\/class notes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"template":"","meta":{"_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"1","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"class_list":["post-804","bulletin","type-bulletin","status-publish","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.3 (Yoast SEO v27.3) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-premium-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Active Reading - Academic Center for Excellence | Transylvania University<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Active reading may seem overwhelming and time consuming.
