Whether in a classroom or on the podium, his approach is grounded in building awareness \u2014 of the music, of the ensemble and of each individual student\u2019s artistry. He views the conductor not as a dictator but as a guide: someone who sets high standards while fostering a respectful and collaborative environment. His goal is to inspire students to take ownership of their ensemble experience and to cultivate a deep love and understanding of the music they perform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Transylvania University, Spell finds particular joy in watching young musicians bring established works of art to life and collaborating with them and his colleagues on new creative projects. He values the inclusive nature of Transylvania\u2019s music program, where all students \u2014 regardless of major \u2014 are encouraged to participate fully in performances, ensembles and learning opportunities. He sees this as a key advantage for students who want to deepen their engagement with music within the broader context of a liberal arts education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spell is especially passionate about integrating research into his teaching, particularly in the area of conducting pedagogy. His work applies Laban Movement Analysis to the physical and expressive aspects of conducting, helping students develop more intentional and effective gestures. Through mentoring conducting students, both at Transylvania and internationally, he continues to refine his scholarship while guiding the next generation of musical leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Away from campus, Spell enjoys hiking \u2014 especially in the mountains \u2014 where he finds space to reflect and recharge.
