Lawrence Spell believes that all conducting is inherently teaching, and that teaching, at its core, is the sharing of knowledge. Whether in a classroom or on the podium, his approach is grounded in building awareness — of the music, of the ensemble and of each individual student’s artistry. He views the conductor not as a dictator but as a guide: someone who sets high standards while fostering a respectful and collaborative environment. His goal is to inspire students to take ownership of their ensemble experience and to cultivate a deep love and understanding of the music they perform.
At Transylvania University, Spell finds particular joy in watching young musicians bring established works of art to life and collaborating with them and his colleagues on new creative projects. He values the inclusive nature of Transylvania’s music program, where all students — regardless of major — are encouraged to participate fully in performances, ensembles and learning opportunities. He sees this as a key advantage for students who want to deepen their engagement with music within the broader context of a liberal arts education.
Spell is especially passionate about integrating research into his teaching, particularly in the area of conducting pedagogy. His work applies Laban Movement Analysis to the physical and expressive aspects of conducting, helping students develop more intentional and effective gestures. Through mentoring conducting students, both at Transylvania and internationally, he continues to refine his scholarship while guiding the next generation of musical leaders.
Away from campus, Spell enjoys hiking — especially in the mountains — where he finds space to reflect and recharge. His commitment to artistry, collaboration and high-impact teaching shapes both his personal and professional life, making him a valued educator and mentor within the Transylvania community.
