One by one, Elizabeth Lewis toured the 16 colleges her aunt, a high school counselor, advised her to consider. She knew that being on campus would give her a real sense of each place. And that\u2019s how the native of Dayton, Ohio, got to her No. 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I visited Transy,\u201d\nLewis \u201918 recalls, \u201cit just had the best feel to it, the most welcoming.\u201d Then,\nshe says, she met the professors. That clinched it for the future international\naffairs major who, after a productive four years, is now in law school at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arriving on campus the inaugural year of Transy\u2019s 100 Doors to Success mentoring program, Lewis began meeting regularly with Transy alumna Julie Muth Goodman \u201976, now a circuit court judge, whose mentorship continued all four years. Her presence provided another form of encouragement, this one from off campus, to take the time she needed to discover her true path and not to sweat the fact that she didn\u2019t yet have a plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat was very\nreassuring to me in my freshman year when I didn\u2019t know what I wanted to do,\u201d\nLewis says. \u201cShe was supportive of me in all the things I tried and didn\u2019t try\nto pigeon hole me into doing anything.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lewis made the most of\nTransy\u2019s liberal arts offerings, branching out from her high school interests\nto try different areas and \u201csee where they might lead\u201d: from computer science\nand accounting to neuroscience and psychology. The process of sampling so many disciplines provided her\nwith a broad foundation and gradually put her on the right path. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She found that \u201chistory,\nreligion, political science, social studies areas from high school \u2014 basically all\nof my interests\u201d were within the international affairs track. \u201cI didn\u2019t have to\nchoose just one area.\u201d By the end of her second year, she realized, \u201cmy\noriginal interests held.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI like to think that from Transy\u2019s academic experience, I\u2019m going to be more cognitively flexible in terms of whatever I end up doing; I can handle different types of jobs just because I\u2019ve handled different types of academic work.\u201d <\/p>Elizabeth Lewis ’18

Her interest in public\npolicy developed during a parliamentary internship in London over the summer of\nher junior year as a Hansard Society Scholar<\/a>. Transy\u2019s study abroad staff had suggested\nshe apply. The opportunity helped clarify law school as a way to pursue public affairs\nand civil service as a career. She began to consider a possible dual degree\nwith a master\u2019s in public policy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI like to think that\nfrom Transy\u2019s academic experience, I\u2019m going to be more cognitively flexible in\nterms of whatever I end up doing; I can handle different types of jobs just\nbecause I\u2019ve handled different types of academic work.\u201d Knowing how much\ncareers are expected to change over her lifetime, Lewis is confident of her \u201cversatility\nin the workplace\u201d because of her liberal arts background. \u201cYou\u2019re more\nversatile, you can adapt to different situations better, you\u2019re more likely to\nbe able to meet the challenges of these different jobs,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lewis is also conscious\nof the \u201csoft\u201d skills developed in the classroom, the personal accountability\nand the ability to engage with a variety of perspectives. All are needed and\ndesirable in the workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt Transy, because of the small class sizes, because the professors are so invested in your education and because they have more wiggle room in terms of what they teach you, I feel like I got a lot more out of the professors and class sizes in terms of societal issues,\u201d she continues. \u201cGetting a sense of where we are in society and how we interact with the rest of the world \u2014 it\u2019s probably made me a better human. It\u2019s going to help me interact with different people and respect their points of view more, to be able to listen and understand society\u2019s problems a little better.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The example set in the classroom and by her 100 Doors mentor helped inspire Lewis toward greater responsibilities and to imagine herself following suit. \u201cI think seeing where she came from and her path gave me a lot of confidence,\u201d Lewis says of Goodman, noting that through knowing her, law became a \u201cviable option.\u201d There\u2019s something potent in a Pioneer mentorship, the camaraderie and the commitment to something beyond campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou see that this is a\npublic figure who is respected, who cares a lot about the community, both at\nlarge and the Transy community,\u201d Lewis continues. \u201cJust seeing how much she\u2019s\ncared about Transy and how dedicated she is has also made me want to do a lot\nof the same things \u2014 like being dedicated to my community and to continue to be\ndedicated to Transy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lewis says that Transy \u201ctrained me to have the discipline to put in the work necessary to persevere in law school.\u201d She\u2019ll be graduating next year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
