\u201cIf you study you’ll become something greater than yourself.\u201d<\/p> From a mother’s song in Wolof, a language of Senegal<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

At the age of 3, Aissata Sackho \u201921 traveled to the Republic\nof Senegal in West Africa to spend her childhood among extended family.\nReturning to her native U.S. to attend secondary school, then college at\nTransylvania, she soon realized how being part of two nations and cultures gave\nher a special vantage point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now a junior, Sackho possesses a wisdom that allows her to\nsee the best of both countries \u2014 and the potential of each. A double major in\ninternational affairs and French, a 2019 First Engagements scholar, and a\nrecent recipient of a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, she is\ncommitted to helping the place of her childhood.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last summer, with support from the Kenan Fund for Faculty\nand Student Enrichment, Sackho returned to Senegal for the first time since her\ndeparture as a young teen. Exploring the education system and the role of women\nin community engagement, she identified impediments that keep some children\nfrom advancing. She was particularly attuned to the reality of many girls who,\nencouraged to marry young, forfeit their education and any hope of ever being\nindependent or able to earn a living.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn our world,\u201d she notes, \u201cwe need education to bring light\ninto darkness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first in her family to attend college, Sackho has\nwitnessed the value of education in her own life. She recognizes that, as with\nso many in the world, becoming educated requires surpassing cultural\nexpectations and a reprioritization of values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spending time in Fouta and in the village of Gued\u00e9, Sackho\nobserved that schools often lack technology and basic resources. On rainy days,\nshe recalls, classes would be canceled because the school floor was drenched.\nBut she couldn\u2019t help thinking that these seemed like fairly easy fixes with\nstronger government funding. She now dreams of helping children receive a\nquality education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education, Sackho reflects, brings opportunity and a form of\ninsurance to individuals and, more broadly, to the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In October, she presented at a conference in San Antonio,\nTexas, alongside Brian Arganbright, professor of French, and Ousmane Pame,\npresident of the Global Ecovillage Network\/Africa. They discussed purposeful\nglobal learning experiences. Sackho notes that Pame\u2019s life and community\ndevelopment work have been an inspiration to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe came back to give back,\u201d she notes of his return to\nSenegal. It\u2019s the same spirit of generosity she experienced in the communities\nshe visited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Transy, Sackho hopes to gain experience by training\nwith NGOs, and then working with Senegal\u2019s government to prioritize and invest\nin education for all people \u2014 girls and boys alike. She knows the challenges,\nyet can see all that\u2019s ready to be accomplished. She only wishes she could\nbegin today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
