Comprehending how we fit into the world inevitably relates\nback to knowing who we are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diaka Savan\u00e9 \u201920 grew up fascinated by the stories of her\nparents who met in Guinea during her mother\u2019s service in the Peace Corps. Their\nmemories piqued her interest in international travel and cultures, and in her\nfamily in West Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coming of age in Lexington, Savan\u00e9 got to know the family of her mother, jewelry designer Rachel Savan\u00e9, but the questions she had long entertained about her father\u2019s family in West Africa became deeper and more compelling. She longed to meet and communicate with the French-speaking family of her father, Lexington restaurateur Mamadou Savan\u00e9, and to comprehend the many dimensions of his childhood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She remembers, as a girl, being unable to conceptualize the\nmore than 100 relatives of her father\u2019s extended family, and how she sought \u201cthe\nfull image\u201d behind the family photos. \u201cI wanted to understand what it was like\nto grow up there and to be in that environment,\u201d she recalls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But before she could get to know her family, Savan\u00e9 needed\nto think and write in French. And then find the means to travel to Guinea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the help of a French immersion scholarship endowed by\n1961 graduates Douglas and Marilyn Estridge Cardwell, Savan\u00e9 was able to gain\nintimate knowledge of French by living with a host family in France. Then, in\nthe summer before her senior year, with support from the Kenan Fund for Faculty\nand Student Enrichment, she at last traveled to Guinea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guided by adviser Kremena Todorova, associate professor of\nEnglish, to make the focus of her oral history project about family, Savan\u00e9 embraced\nthe concept of an autoethnographic study, gathering stories of her family and\nplacing them in a broader socio-political and cultural context. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHistory in Guinea is always told orally,\u201d she explains. \u201cMy\nproject was to immortalize that.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than a more formal audio recording device, she chose\nto write in journals in French. \u201cIt made more sense,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s how I\nwas absorbing it.\u201d Communicating in French allowed her to get close to family\nmembers. \u201cSpeaking English would have been a step removed.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through story, she learned not just details of family\nmembers, events and history, but \u201chow people interact,\u201d she says. \u201cThey spoke\nto me about how they grew up.\u201d Uncles shared memories of her father that gave\nher a sense of the freedom he enjoyed in childhood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She placed herself within a lineage that named every\nfirst-born female \u201cDiaka.\u201d She derived confidence from the stories of bravery\nabout her grandmother Diaka. This information, particularly in an oral\ntradition, is difficult to come by without multiple family members sharing\ntheir knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, after Guinea, her family no longer feels distant. She\nunderstands where she and her father fit into their extensive family. This\nawareness is important to her. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So too, are the broader social revelations: the \u201csolidarity\nof the populations\u201d she observed, the importance of relationships and the\nwelcoming generosity. Offering examples, she remembers complimenting a woman on\nher bracelet: \u201cHere, have it,\u201d the woman proffered.  And how, \u201cwhen people stop by the house just\nto say hello or ask a question,\u201d she says, \u201cyou nourish them, even if you don\u2019t\nhave the means.\u201d   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Transy, Savan\u00e9 is a student leader active in social\njustice issues, a First Engagements scholar and coordinator and a recipient of\nthe Charles and Susan Shearer Scholarship. As she works toward\ngraduation in May, she is completing Transy\u2019s Peace Corps Prep Program. She\nhopes to take her years of tutoring experience at the Carnegie Center and teach\nabroad through the Peace Corps and other programs before pursuing her \u201cdream\ncareer\u201d as a foreign service officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love being around different people and listening to\ndifferent languages \u2014 just hearing about where people grew up, and how that\u2019s\ndifferent from where I grew up,\u201d she concludes with enthusiasm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
