Have you ever considered what it\u2019s like for students of\nmilitary kids growing up abroad, moving around with their parents and\ncontinually having to make new friends in different countries? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matt \u201900 and Melissa McDougal \u201900 Koger know firsthand \u2014\nMatt grew up in the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) school\nsystem with a father who was active duty military, and Melissa\u2019s father, Stan\nMcDougal \u201970, was in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. They appreciated this unique\nway for kids to get acquainted with the world, and they always wanted to find a\nway to give back to that community. The Kogers both worked in Anderson County,\nKentucky, schools \u2014 Matt as a school psychologist and Melissa as a teacher \u2014\nand they considered finishing their careers overseas once their two daughters\nhad grown up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But their youngest battled through some health trouble when\nshe was young, and it helped the Kogers realize: Why not give them the same\nopportunity? So Melissa found a position at a DoDEA district office in Puerto\nRico working with teachers to improve their instructional skills, and the\nfamily packed up and moved there for 15 months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, four years ago, when a school psychology opportunity\nopened up for Matt at a DoDEA school in the Netherlands, they moved again, and\nthey have been working at AF North International School ever since. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The school is divided into U.S., British, Canadian and\nGerman sections, and within those sections, every NATO nation is represented.\nMelissa has taught students from places like Azerbaijan, Finland and Lithuania,\nand the girls are thriving in a world wholly different from the one they knew\nin the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey\u2019re learning about the Dutch culture and the history of\nthe Netherlands, and they did the same in Puerto Rico,\u201d Melissa says. \u201cIt gives\nthem another perspective on life, seeing all these cultures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matt adds, \u201cThey\u2019re learning a greater worldview, that not\neverything is always so America-centric. It\u2019s a world of cultures that they\u2019ll\nbe able to interact with internationally, and hopefully in their futures\nthey\u2019ll be able to work in environments that appreciate diversity and recognize\nthe opportunities that other cultures can bring to the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, this idea never really occurred to them as\nundergraduates dating at Transylvania. But they realize now that their\neducation was readying them to tackle issues that face students growing up in\nthis unusual situation, along with the everyday challenges that children navigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe coursework at Transy prepares you for that,\u201d Matt says.\n\u201cEspecially in the social sciences and education, you learn to deal with\npopulations that have difficulties. Here we\u2019re dealing with parents who are\nbeing deployed, and frequent school changes is a unique challenge. But it\u2019s a\nresilient group of kids that are able to effectively transition and meet new\nfriends, and sometimes their paths end up crossing again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s rewarding work that the Kogers have no plans to give up\nanytime soon. They say they plan to stay in the Netherlands indefinitely,\nkeeping their global education adventure alive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
