\"Barton<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

One of the unique opportunities available to students in Lexington is the Sister Cities program<\/a>, which facilitates partnerships including an exchange student partnership and a yearlong teaching placement at schools in one of Lexington\u2019s four Sister Cities \u2014 Deauville, France; County Kildare, Ireland; Shinhidaka, Japan; or Newmarket, England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barton Lynch \u201916 participated in the exchange program in\nDeauville for three weeks as a high school student and fell in love with the\narea and the Sister Cities organization. He interned with Sister Cities as a\nsenior international affairs and French major at Transy, and when he graduated,\nhe went back to Deauville, this time to teach English to preschool,\nkindergarten and first grade students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe whole experience was such a good thing for me; it was\nthe most fulfilling work,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd it gave me the skills to go out and be\nconfident in tackling any challenge that I don\u2019t know I\u2019m prepared for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He spent his days off traveling Europe and immersing himself\nin the culture, testing his limits in an unfamiliar place as he developed his\ncommunication and adaptability. In fact, he says the ability to adapt in\nuncomfortable situations was one of the most useful skills he learned during\nhis time abroad, and he continues to draw upon those in his current position as\nan account researcher with Brunswick Group, a strategic advisory firm in\nWashington, D.C. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeing able to shift your perspective to understand another\nis really what I learned,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd I was able to think about what I wanted\nto do, who I wanted to be and how I wanted to contribute to the world.\nEverything I learned abroad is used in my time now.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
