Transylvania University students are getting worldwide attention this week for participating in an archaeological excavation that discovered a Civil War photography studio \u2014 and evidence soldiers dyed their hair for portraits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First\nreported in the Lexington Herald-Leader<\/a>, the story has become international\nnews, reported by publications like Newsweek and the UK’s Daily Mail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transylvania students in recent years have traveled to\nJessamine County south of Lexington to work at the Union Camp Nelson<\/a> as part of anthropology\nprofessor Chris Begley’s May term class Field Methods in Archaeology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You never know in archaeology what people are going to\npick up on,” Begley said. Sometimes it’s the sensational stuff \u2014 like\nfinding gold at a shipwreck site. “Other times it’s just the odd or\ninteresting things like the use of hair dye in the Civil War.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Transylvania students were assisting Stephen McBride,\ndirector of interpretation and archaeology at Camp Nelson. “I’m glad to\nsee Steve’s work getting attention, because he’s done a lot of important work\nthere and elsewhere,” Begley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transylvania graduate Mackenzie Mirre ’18, who’s now\nstudying underwater archaeology while pursuing her master’s degree in maritime studies\nat East Carolina University, went on to intern and volunteer for McBride after\ntaking Begley’s class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day Mirre was cleaning and cataloging artifacts from a\nsmall plot of land where she had been working when she noticed a stencil. She\nsaid McBride then carefully unfolded it to reveal the name of C.J. Young. Turns\nout, this was used to mark the name of the young photographer \u2014 who went on to open\na studio in Lexington \u2014 on the images he created for the soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stencil was one of several artifacts, including picture\nframes, that led researchers to believe they’d found a photography studio. Begley\nsaid he knew there had been a store near where they were working at the camp,\nwhere civilians were allowed to set up businesses during the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transy students also found bottles that once contained\nthings for soldiers to fix their hair before getting their pictures taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The researchers from Transylvania University in\nLexington initially thought that the bottles were used to hold medicine,”\naccording to the Newsweek\narticle<\/a>. “However, when the team started putting the pieces of glass\nback together they noticed some featured embossed lettering, with names such as\n‘Bear’s Oil,’ ‘Christadoro’ and ‘Dr. Jaynes.'”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citing photography books, McBride said the soldiers who had\nlight-colored hair may have been using dye to keep the black and white photos\nfrom making their locks look white or gray, according to the article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The headlines of the stories reporting the Camp Nelson finds\nfocus on the fact the men dyed their hair for photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mirre is pleased with the attention given to the work at\nCamp Nelson, which is a national monument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I am very excited that the history and stories of individuals at Camp Nelson are becoming public knowledge,” she said. “So many amazing things were happening there.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
