Pioneering demands a certain kind of\nindependence, endurance and a willingness to face off against uncertain\noutcomes. Stevee Candrl \u201920 possesses that confidence and ability to strike out\non her own. Perhaps it comes from years of competing at equestrian events, a\nsingle rider on horseback who knows the rush from soaring over obstacles, but\nis willing to fall off and get back up again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A first-generation college student from the Cincinnati suburbs, Candrl is the first Pioneer to be part of a new 3+4 Pharmacy Program<\/a>, a partnership with the University of Kentucky. This means that while other seniors are finishing their undergraduate degree, she\u2019s a full-time student on UK\u2019s campus at work on her Doctor of Pharmacy degree. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Candrl, who will graduate with her Transy cohort in May with a B.A. in liberal studies, says she\u2019s already seeing the value of her liberal arts foundation. She finds herself at an advantage from having the rigor and accountability of learning in small classes, the quality of her science education, her ability to write well, and the breadth of knowledge that makes it easier to talk with people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI feel that I have a much better\nfoundation in chemistry and biology to be able to succeed,\u201d she explains. At\nthe same time, she adds with a nod to the multiple subjects she studied, \u201cyou\u2019re\nnot just this science-only robot.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She reflects on the importance of \u201cthe\nwhole liberal arts mindset of accepting all people\u201d and how Transy \u201cmakes you\nthink about things, take a step back and ask why you\u2019re thinking like that, and\nthen reevaluate it.\u201d She\u2019s a step ahead as she learns how the work of a\npharmacist can be compromised by personal bias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not that hard to be kind to people and understand where they\u2019re coming from,\u201d she concludes, \u201cwhich is a huge part of pharmacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Candrl, who came to Transy thinking she\nmight become a chemical engineer, decided to explore the pre-pharmacy program\nafter working as a pharmacy tech over the summer. Faculty helped her plan out a\ndemanding schedule to meet the requirements in time to apply for the inaugural\nprogram. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are no ifs or ands about it,\u201d she laughs, \u201cTransy is hard.\u201d Its reputation for offering strong science and pre-health studies, resulting in 90% admission rates into health programs \u2014 was a big pull for her. \u201cEspecially,\u201d she adds, \u201csince I didn\u2019t really know for sure what I wanted to do.\u201d That and the supportive team atmosphere of the eventing team \u201creally sold me,\u201d she says. And, she quips, \u201cIf I could go to school in the Horse Capital of the World, why wouldn\u2019t I?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every experience contributed to her development and led to a robust application to the 3+4 program with UK. (She was accepted on the same day she interviewed.) Candrl recognizes just how prepared she was academically, but also in how to present herself on paper and in person.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnother great thing about Transy,\u201d\nshe explains, \u201cis that I had a lot of practice interviews before I even stepped\nfoot on UK\u2019s campus.\u201d The Center for Academic and Professional Enrichment\nconducted multiple types of interviews and guided her resume and cover letter\nwriting. She also went before Transy\u2019s Pre-Health Advisory Committee, who wrote\na letter of recommendation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was very well prepared,\u201d she says.\n   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As she transitions into the new program, she\u2019s on solid footing. \u201cAt Transy you definitely learn to study and you learn what works for you,\u201d she says, \u201cso I\u2019ve been prepared. I know what I need to do to do well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chemistry has always been her\nsubject. And pharmacy, as she\u2019s discovering, is a profession that allows her to\ncombine her interests in drug mechanisms, patient relations and problem\nsolving.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGoing in, I knew there was a lot I\ncould do with pharmacy\u201d she says of the many interchangeable career paths it\noffers. \u201cBut there is so much more than I could ever imagine.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
