Let\u2019s do an exercise. Without considering tuition and fees, list the schools that you are most interested in applying. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now…apply<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Why? We\u2019ll let you in on a secret:<\/span>\u00a0cost is<\/b>\u00a0one of the biggest misconceptions in college admissions<\/strong>. Take everything you know about the true price of college tuition and toss it. <\/span>
\n<\/a>
\nHere\u2019s why you should apply to your top colleges, regardless of sticker price:
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>1. Sticker price is NOT how much you will pay.<\/b><\/span> The price you pay to a college is called \u201cactual cost.\u201d Actual cost<\/strong> is the amount of money left <\/span>after <\/span><\/i>subtracting money provided in what is called your\u00a0\u201cfinancial aid award package.\u201d College financial aid award packages\u00a0include merit scholarships, grants, work study, and loans. Actual cost\u00a0<\/em>is what matters.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"AvgFinAidPackg\"<\/span>Here\u2019s an example…<\/span>our average financial aid award package last year was <\/span>$26,643<\/b>. Imagine you receive this average award. If you subtract it from tuition and fees of <\/span>$37,290<\/b>, you are left with an actual cost of tuition and fees of <\/span>$10,647<\/b>.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>While this is not the full, encompassing cost (i.e. room and board, books, etc.) it gives you an idea of how sticker price and actual price can be significantly different. Plus, this scenario doesn\u2019t include any on- or off-campus part time jobs or external funding you may receive! <\/span>The lesson is: don\u2019t rule out a school because of sticker price. <\/b>You\u2019ll be surprised which options are best come April.<\/span>
\n<\/a><\/p>\n

\n


\n<\/b>2. It doesn\u2019t matter how much your family income is\u2026you can attend Transy.<\/b><\/span> Our students come from every<\/em> socioeconomic background. In fact, nearly half of our student\u2019s annual family income is less than $80,000. <\/span>
\n<\/span>

\n<\/span>3. Everyone plays the game of loans.<\/span> <\/b>While you often hear about students receiving \u201cfull rides\u201d to college, the reality is this is a <\/span>small <\/span><\/i>part of the overall student population. Today, more than ever, top scholarships are <\/span>very <\/span><\/i>competitive and hard to come by. <\/span><\/p>\n

For most individuals, loans are a common practice when purchasing\u00a0a new car or paying for a home. They are big<\/em> expenses\u00a0worthy of a big<\/em> investment. If you think about it, education isn’t any different. Would you rather buy a Volvo or a Lexus? Which has more bells and whistles? Which is more reliable? Which is safer? And, which will get you where you want to go? Is it worth paying a bit more for security, comfort, and great mileage? You can ask the same\u00a0of a great education!<\/span><\/p>\n

And if you do have to take out loans, here’s the good news:\u00a0student loans are considered \u201cgood credit”. (Yes,\u00a0there is such a thing!) Good credit is credit that when paid regularly and steadily helps you establish a positive credit score. A credit score a number makes you eligible (or not eligible) to receive loans for purchases of expensive items, such as cars and homes, later in life.<\/p>\n

It’s worthwhile to know that\u00a0Transy grads take out <\/strong>15% fewer loans than the national average of other private school borrowers and nearly $1,000 less than the average student who takes loans from Kentucky public <\/i><\/strong>colleges.<\/strong> So even if you have to take loans, you will pay your loans off faster, with greater ease, and<\/em> help you earn a positive credit score that will help you in your post-graduation life.<\/p>\n

\n<\/span>4. Private schools may be cheaper than public schools.<\/span> <\/b>When you compare cost, look at tuition, actual cost, <\/span>and<\/b> graduation rate. <\/span>Only 1 in 3 students graduate in four years from public institutions.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\"4-yearpublic<\/p>\n

Think it won\u2019t be you? It may not, but history is not on your side. Just a small road bump, like changing majors or taking a class or two out of order, can easily result in extra time and money. So, the next time you compare colleges, data suggests you should tack on an additional <\/span>extra year of tuition and fees<\/b> to each public school, <\/span>then <\/span><\/i>compare to other options since that is the reality of most students.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ultimately, cost<\/em> matters, but sticker price<\/em>\u00a0doesn’t.<\/strong> Don’t let sticker price deter you from applying to a college that may be best fit for you!<\/p>\n
