This year’s Moosnick Lectureship in Judaic Studies will\nfocus on the #MeToo movement through a variety of religious lenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The public is invited to this free event on Wednesday, Nov.\n6, at 7 p.m. in Transylvania University’s Carrick Theater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a break from past Moosnick lectures \u2014 which always aim to\nfoster interreligious discourse \u2014 \u201cThe Violence We Face: Women, Faith, and the\n#MeToo Movement\u201d is more of a discussion than a lecture. A panel representing\nthe Jewish, Christian and Muslim traditions will answer questions from a\nmoderator, and then audience members will ask their own questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transylvania religion professor Carole Barnsley said the\npanel style is conducive to addressing #MeToo, which has grown into a global\nmovement supporting victims of sexual assault and harassment. Rather than\nlistening to one lecturer, the format brings in a variety of perspectives to\nweigh in on the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program features Rabbi Mira\nWasserman<\/a>, who is director of the Center for Jewish Ethics and assistant\nprofessor of rabbinic literature at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in\nPennsylvania. She is a go-to speaker on Jewish ethics and the #MeToo movement\nand is co-editor of the forthcoming “Respect and Responsibility: A Jewish\nEthics Study Guide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The panelists are Emily Askew, a Lexington Theological\nSeminary professor, who developed a Theology and Domestic Violence course; and\nNadia Rasheed, who is a local physician and human rights activist volunteering\nwith organizations such as Christian Muslim Dialogue, Council on\nAmerican-Islamic Relations and Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The moderator is Shana Sippy, a Centre College religion\nprofessor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is the first time we’ve included a Muslim voice,\nso I’m particularly excited about that,” Barnsley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previous Moosnick lectures have mostly aimed to educate\nChristians about the Jewish perspective, bringing members of the two religions\ninto dialogue and helping them network, Barnsley said. This year, having\nrepresentatives from three traditions will expand the focus of the event. The\ndiscussion will illuminate where they may converge or diverge on the #MeToo\nissue \u2014 perhaps leading those in attendance to new insights into their own\nfaiths as well as others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transylvania religion professor Leslie Ribovich said,\n“It’s an importation topic, and important for the community to be thinking\nabout the #MeToo movement from a diversity of religious perspectives \u2014 and it’s\nan opportunity to learn about those religious perspectives through the #MeToo\nmovement.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Religious communities in general have been thinking about\nvital, ethical questions of their day for a long time, Ribovich said. “The\nresources and tools of religions can bring a lot to bear on the topic. At the\nsame time, religious communities themselves are wanting to look at how to deal\nwith these issues in their own communities.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The professors stressed how the event will be engaging for a\nvariety of people, even those who don’t identify with one of the faith\ntraditions represented by the speakers.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We as a program are excited to be involved in this\nlecture, and we’re very much looking forward to people coming and getting\nsomething out of it,” Barnsley said. “It’s for the whole community;\nit’s not just for people interested in religion.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transylvania hosts the Moosnick Lectureship in partnership\nwith the Lexington Theological Seminary. As part of the series, Wasserman will\ngive a public lecture at Temple Adath Israel on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
