Albert \u201cAl\u201d Prewitt \u201957, a top athlete during his\nTransylvania career, passed away Oct. 8 at age 86.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A multi-sport athlete both at Lexington\u2019s Henry Clay High\nSchool and Transy, Prewitt played baseball for the Pioneers and was a member of\nC.M. Newton\u2019s men\u2019s basketball teams. He was named to the All-Kentucky\nIntercollegiate Athletic Conference team four times in basketball while scoring\n1,424 career points. He remains the 19th all-time leading scorer for the\nPioneers. Prewitt was named male Pioneer Athlete of the Year in 1956. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Prewitt made his most significant impact in the sport as a high school basketball coach, earning a career record of 654-237. The majority of those wins \u2013 621 of them \u2013 came at his alma mater, Henry Clay, where he coached for 29 seasons. His teams made eight trips to the state tournament, including Henry Clay’s 1983 championship.\u00a0Prewitt was named Kentucky High School Coach of the Year several\u00a0times and was a past president of the Kentucky Coaches Association.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCoach Prewitt was a Kentucky basketball coaching legend,\u201d said Pioneers men’s basketball coach Brian Lane. \u00a0\u201cHe was one of the most respected basketball minds in the state and never forgot his Transylvania roots. He could be a tough, hard-nosed coach, but we also saw a side of him where he loved to laugh and tell stories.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lane recalled Prewitt as a fierce competitor who was often battling fellow Transylvania alum and Hall of Famer Nolan Barger \u201967, who coached cross-town rival Tates Creek High School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After wrapping up his high school coaching career, Prewitt returned\nto Transylvania from 1991-1994 as an assistant coach for Don Lane. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 “Transylvania has been blessed to have some of\nthe greatest basketball coaches come through our institution and Al Prewitt was\ncertainly one of those,” said Holly Sheilley, Transy\u2019s vice president of\nathletics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prewitt was inducted into the Pioneer Hall of Fame<\/a> in 1997.\u00a0 He is also a member of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame and the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
