Dr. John N. Williams was there when President Eisenhower spoke at Transylvania University’s 175th<\/sup> anniversary celebration and dedication of the Frances Carrick Thomas Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He can’t say whether he liked Ike’s speech. He was only 2,\nafter all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the story does highlight how deeply ingrained the school\nhas been in his life since the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Williams is Transylvania’s new interim president. He also\nserves on the Board of Trustees and graduated from the university in 1974, as\ndid his wife, Lucy. His parents \u2014 also Transy graduates \u2014 enrolled him when he\nwas a toddler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it’s no surprise the transition to his new role seemed so\nnatural during a recent faculty and staff meeting in Carrick Theater. Williams,\nwho as a student worked technical theater on the very stage where he kicked off\nthe meeting, joked about helping out if anything went wrong with the\naudio-visual equipment. And when the choir director asked him if he’d be in\nthis year’s faculty and staff holiday concert, the former Transy choir member\ndidn’t miss a beat: “Sign me up,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Williams’ enthusiasm carries over to his leadership role.\n“As the interim president I’m not going to be warming the seat,” he\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance, he looks forward to being an ardent spokesperson for the university, and he plans to participate in an upcoming Symposium on Postsecondary Education Trusteeship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Williams also enjoys being back on campus. “It’s very energizing,” he said, specifically mentioning the ongoing, significant enhancements to campus \u2014 from the new residence halls to the Campus Center project to the Carpenter Academic Center renovations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When I was a student here, buildings were kind of\nsecondary,” he said. “Students today and their parents are looking\nfor a higher level of accoutrements; I have been in the new dorms, and they are\njust fantastic.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actually, much of the academic side of campus was new when\nWilliams was a student \u2014 including Brown Science Center, where the biology\nmajor worked in a chemical stockroom and took The History of Science with\nprofessor Leland Brown, whom the building is named after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Williams went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Medicine and a\nMaster of Business Administration from the University of Louisville. His\ncollege administration roles included serving as assistant provost and dean at\nIndiana University, the University of North Carolina and U of L. Additionally,\nhe was chair of the Commission on Dental Accreditation \u2014 and chair of the\ngroup’s Predoctoral Review Committee, which oversees accreditation policy for\nall D.D.S. and D.M.D. educational programs in the United States. In fact,\nWilliams is nationally and internationally known for his work in accreditation,\nacademic program development and assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His dentistry background serves him well as university\npresident. (Note the president of Lexington’s other major university is a\nD.M.D.) “Dentists are very astute diagnosticians,” Williams said.\n“We are well-educated and well-trained to look at things in excruciating\ndetail. I’ve had people say, ‘How did you notice that \u2014 we’ve been doing the\nsame thing for the last five or 10 years and nobody has said that.'”\nBasically, they examine the details of a situation and then come up with a\ntreatment plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both dentists and administrators emphasize routine checkups\nand prevention \u2014 keeping cavities in check by having you brush your teeth, and\nkeeping student debt in check by making sure you’re equipped with a solid\neducation through the right curricular offerings, close faculty-student\ninteraction and the support of a healthy university endowment. “The costs\nare real,” Williams said. “We’ve got to be diligent about looking at\nour expense side and not creating a huge amount of debt burden for our students\nand families.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his commitment to supporting Transylvania students and\ntheir liberal arts education, both Williams and his wife in 2009 received the\nMorrison Medallion, the highest honor presented by the Transylvania Alumni\nBoard each year to graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Williams took\nover his new leadership role<\/a> from Seamus Carey, who now is president of Iona\nCollege in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking to the future, to a time when his office no longer\noverlooks the campus where he and his parents listened to Eisenhower during the\n1954 dedication of the school’s new library, Williams sees himself cruising\nalong the waterways of the Eastern United States in his 40-foot Mainship. He\nand his wife plan to resume their self-guided boat tour from the Great Lakes to\nthe Gulf of Mexico, which they cut short when he was named interim president. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Williams said that when he\u2019s boating he draws from his skills\nas a navigator \u2014 “which is also very effective for administrators, to take\nus from point A to point B.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
