A recent Transylvania University grad wrote her name on the\nseat of a chair in Tevin Monroe’s office \u2014 along with the words “AWARE \u2014\nyouth crisis advocate: Juneau, AK.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monroe hopes the chair \u2014 emblazoned with the seal of the\nAmeriCorps national service organization \u2014 will someday have as many comments\nas a high school senior’s yearbook. He’s starting a tradition: Transy students\nplanning to go off for a year of service work will note where they’re going on\nthe “AmeriChair.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A former AmeriCorps VISTA<\/a> member at Transylvania himself, Monroe is the school’s new coordinator of civic engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His new role is similar to the one he’d been filling as a\nVISTA for the past year: He works with local organizations and students on volunteer\nteams and in community-based Federal Work-Study programs. In doing so he\nprovides the dual benefit of supplying nonprofits with volunteers, and students\nwith service, leadership and job opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monroe was introduced to volunteer work at Detroit’s Wayne\nState University, where he earned a Bachelor\u2019s of Science in nutrition and\npublic health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He twice participated in the school’s Alternative Spring\nBreak community engagement projects, which included working in local urban\ngardens and a nonprofit called Auntie Na’s House, where a woman named Auntie Na\nprovides people with shelter, food and other necessities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That alternative break taught him to feel more empathetic,\nnon-judgmental and comfortable interacting with Detroit residents he otherwise\nwouldn’t have gotten a chance to meet. “That experience is what taught me\nthe most about the city,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That experience also was the impetus for Transylvania’s\nfirst Alternative\nBreak<\/a> in Lexington at the end of the school year. The weeklong\nprogram focused on themes of food justice, immigration and community\ndevelopment in partnership with local nonprofits. \u201cWe wanted to give students a\nholistic experience of the city they live in,\u201d Monroe said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, Monroe and another former Transy VISTA member, Margaux Crider, were recognized<\/a> with an American Civic Collaboration Awards honorable mention for this past May\u2019s Alternative Break. The honor coincided with the Washington Monthly ranking Transylvania<\/a> among the nation’s top 10 liberal arts colleges for promoting public service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going forward, Monroe looks to work with faculty to increase\nservice learning components in academic coursework. His first public engagement\nwork back at Wayne State, after all, was required for a class. For him, having\nthat class requirement was the nudge needed to learn what kind of impact he\ncould make in a community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now Monroe has found his niche \u2014 his way of facing a world\nthat can be frustrating because some people are left behind, marginalized,\ncaught up in cycles of generational poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He’s arrived at a mental place where he can say, “I\nhave to do something about this \u2014 I can’t let it happen in my neighborhood and\nnot be an active citizen.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of all the ways to go about that \u2014 from politics to running\na nonprofit \u2014 Monroe has chosen to promote civic engagement at a university.\n“That just seems like the best use of my talents and abilities,” he\nsaid. “Not everyone can do everything, but everyone can do something.
