Sarah Bray, Transylvania University’s associate dean for academic affairs, has no problem identifying the stately tree outside her new office’s window: a pin oak, like the other one flanking the Old Morrison administration building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A biology professor specializing in botany, Bray recently\nbegan as associate dean on a permanent basis after briefly serving as interim.\nThis fall will be her first full term in the new role. “I’m excited to see\nwhat a new school year brings,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bray takes over from Michael Cairo, who this\nsummer became<\/a> interim vice president for academic affairs and dean\nof the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her primary duties include working with students who are\nstruggling academically and supervising the directors of the Writing Center,\nFirst Year Seminar and Learning Skills programs. She also represents the dean’s\noffice on the Committee on Admissions and Academic Standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of Bray\u2019s goals is to help secure more external grants\nfor faculty members. “I’d really like to find ways to support faculty\nscholarship and faculty research with students,” she said. Another goal is\nto increase student retention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to her duties as associate dean for academic\naffairs, she will teach a Diversity of Life class this fall. Bray, who began at\nTransylvania in 2007, specializes in invasive plants and their effect on\necology. She has a Ph.D. in botany from the University of Florida and earned\nher undergraduate degree from Coe College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bray has been working lately with the Urban Forestry\nInitiative, which this past October sponsored a Tree Walk and poetry and art\nunder the trees at Transy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She wants to raise awareness of trees on campus and work on maintaining\nand diversifying them for a variety of reasons \u2014 from beautification to education\nto increasing the physical and mental health of the Transy community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the one outside her window, she’d like to go through\nhistorical photos of Old Morrison to find out when it \u2014 and the one on the\nother side of the steps \u2014 were planted. The oaks, after all, not only look nice\nbut provide shade during the May commencement ceremony. “Graduation would\nbe very hot without them,” she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
