As the 2019-20 academic year kicks off for schools across Lexington, a Transylvania University program designed to help first-generation and underrepresented student populations connect with college has been recognized for its efforts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During\nthe Fayette County Public Schools 2019 State of Schools presentation on\nWednesday, Transylvania\u2019s Pioneer Pathway program received a Golden Apple\nPartnership Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe\nGolden Apple Awards recognize high-performance community partners that provide\nan exceptional commitment of time, energy and expertise to individual schools \u2014\nor the Fayette County district as a whole,\u201d said Taran McZee, associate vice\npresident for diversity and inclusion at Transylvania. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\nhave worked hard with Fayette County Public Schools to highlight our\ninstitution, but most importantly to give students of color an opportunity to\nexperience college life,\u201d McZee said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pioneer Pathway got its start when Transy answered the call from teachers in Woodford County who had identified the need for a program to help underrepresented boys gain access to college. It has since grown with funding the William R. Kenan Charitable Trust, most recently under the guidance of Te\u2019Asia Martin, Transy\u2019s assistant director of diversity and campus engagement, to include students in all seven Fayette County high schools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur\nteam has been grooming and developing this program to be the best it can be,\nand we are planning to serve our Fayette and Woodford county schools with the\nbest of our resources,\u201d Martin said on receiving the recognition. \u201cI am excited\nand looking forward to what the 2019-20 year brings.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nprogram fills an opportunity gap for students who have the academic capacity\nbut often lack the information, resources and support to help them through the\ndaunting college application process. Other students need the Pathway\nexperience to help them understand which college is right for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This\nprogram gives these students access to places they\u2019ve never seen and things\nthey\u2019ve never done,\u201d said Johnnie Johnson, interim vice president for\nenrollment and director of admissions. \u201cWe want them to have the right\ninformation and opportunities to make the right choice.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students participating in the program have several opportunities\nto visit to campus each year, during which students work with faculty, staff\nand students in the Transy community. They take part in mock interviews,\nimprove their application essay and resume, sit in on a college class, and\nlearn the ins and outs of financial aid.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
