In grade school, Drew Dodds \u201921 knew he wanted to be a doctor. Then,\nin high school, he discovered a new passion for business and joined the Future\nBusiness Leaders of America. \u201cI was comfortable in both environments,\u201d he\nexplains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, when searching for a college, the competitive swimmer needed\na place where he could develop his multiple interests. He wanted a campus where\nhe could be successful academically \u2014 with a challenging pre-health STEM\nprogram \u2014 while also thriving as an athlete. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dodds says he chose Transylvania, not so much because it\u2019s \u201cin\nhis blood\u201d (his parents, an aunt and two uncle are Pioneers*), but because all\nof these possibilities could be explored on an intimate campus in the city of\nLexington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being able to major in biology and minor in chemistry and\nbusiness administration makes all the difference to someone who plans to be a\nphysician or surgeon and may even run his own practice one day. \u201cThe business administration minor allows you\nto explore every aspect,\u201d he notes. \u201cYou take one class in every area of\nbusiness. I really like that about the minor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In preparing for his future, the rising junior has a lot going on. Just this summer the native of Madisonville, Kentucky, attended medical school boot camp (including gross anatomy), participated in a research project on finches (appreciating attention to detail) and is about to intern in an emergency room. Last summer he interned in operating rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I chose Transy for the small school in the big city,\u201d he explains. \u201cI tend to learn better in smaller groups. You can know the professor better, which is a big component of Transy that I really like.<\/p>Drew Dodds ’21<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

As a sophomore, he was one of three Pioneers selected for early admission to medical school, an opportunity, along with Transy\u2019s own pre-health program, that Professor of Chemistry Eva Csuhai strongly encourages her students not to miss. Early admission means a space is being saved for Dodds at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine-Northern Kentucky Campus. He still must make a successful application, but it\u2019s something he now feels more confident about, thanks to the program\u2019s offerings and Transy\u2019s rigorous STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and general education curriculum. Together, they\u2019re preparing him to make the strongest application possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTransy is\none of the few schools that has the opportunity to do the Early Assurance Program<\/a>,\u201d\nsays Dodds. \u201cWe get three spots.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The medical\nschool boot camp at the start of the summer offered experiences that are\ndefining moments in a pre-health student\u2019s aspirations, particularly gross\nanatomy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dodds was\nriveted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were\nable to explore different parts of the brain, the spinal cord and nervous\nsystem,\u201d he says. Students could hold every organ in their hands. \u201cThe coolest\npart to me,\u201d he marvels, was the unravelling of the intestines, foot after\nfoot. \u201cIt\u2019s crazy how long that is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dodds is already anticipating the additional help the program will give him as a rising senior next summer, through practice interviews and MCAT preparation. \u201cAnd we\u2019ll do case studies, write our findings and opinions, learn how to approach patients with our opinions.” All of this, he says, \u201cwill be very helpful when I\u2019m applying.\u201d   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transy\u2019s\npre-health curriculum prepared him to compete for the early assurance program\nand continues to build his knowledge and practice for admission to medical\nschool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll of Transy\u2019s\nSTEM classes really push,\u201d he says. \u201cThey\u2019re intense. They\u2019re hard. But they\nare classes that are going to make it easier in the long run to study for the\nMCAT or the DAT or for pharmacy. They make it easier for you to get a better\nscore.\u201d So, too, are the general education requirements, he adds, such as psychology\nand philosophy: \u201cThose are big parts of some medical fields and are on the MCAT\nand required by other graduate pre-health schools.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, research is often a requisite for medical school candidates. As a research assistant working for Associate Professor of Biology Becky Fox and the project\u2019s counterpart at the University of Kentucky, David Westneat, Dodds says he\u2019s learned about more than the behavior of finches as he\u2019s dutifully recorded the birds\u2019 daily activities for later analysis.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPaying more\nattention to detail is something huge that\u2019s coming from this,\u201d he says of the\ncare and diligence required. \u201cBecause you don\u2019t want to mess up the data that\nsomeone is going to use for a project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of these opportunities are developing a strong skillset and a broader understanding in Dodds. They also serve as a process of elimination as he recognizes the kind of surgery or research that ignites his interest, as did his boot camp participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBack to the gross anatomy lab,\u201d he concludes, recalling the mysteries of the human interior made visible, \u201cit was very interesting and drove my passion even more for \u2018this is what I want to do.\u2019”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
