Passionate. Opinionated. Driven. A force of\nnature.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those are just some of the words used to describe Dr. Charles\nAmbrose, a University of Kentucky professor who became a champion of Transylvania\u2019s\nSpecial Collections. Ambrose <a href=\"https:\/\/milwardfuneral.com\/obituaries\/352-dr-charles-t-ambrose\">passed\naway on June 29<\/a>, leaving a legacy of contributions to the history of\nmedical research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambrose was a professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics at UK\u2019s College of Medicine. But his interest in 18th and 19th century medicine is what brought him to Transylvania and built a decades-long relationship with the university\u2019s Special Collections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Ambrose_2011.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Charles Ambrose\" class=\"wp-image-6629\" width=\"362\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/07\/Ambrose_2011.jpg 661w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/07\/Ambrose_2011-328x350.jpg 328w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/07\/Ambrose_2011-281x300.jpg 281w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/><figcaption>Dr. Charles Ambrose (1929-2019)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Ambrose had been coming to Transylvania for years to conduct personal research, but our formal relationship with him started in 2007 when, after conversations with then Dean William Pollard, he created and supported a medical history symposium,\u201d said Susan Brown, director of Transylvania\u2019s library. \u201cAmbrose was passionate about the history of medicine and especially about medicine in the Ohio Valley and in Lexington. He very much wanted everyone to be aware of the rich and important role our area played in 18th and 19th century medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Brown, Ambrose\u2019s enthusiasm for Transylvania\u2019s history expressed itself in his vision for a beautifully designed, award-winning print magazine that showcased the collections and history of Transylvania.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe believed strongly in spreading knowledge and information about Transylvania\u2019s incredible collections. This became <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.transy.edu\/SpecialCollections\/TransyTreasures\">Transylvania Treasures<\/a>, which would not exist except for his dedicated support,\u201d Brown explained. Ambrose contributed multiple articles for the publication, served on the editorial board, and financially supported the creation and printing of 18 issues.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Ambrose was a generous, passionate advocate for our Special Collections,&#8221; said Special Collections Librarian BJ Gooch. &#8220;His indomitable spirit, sense of adventure and demanding intelligence will be greatly missed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambrose, an avid bibliophile, made use of Transylvania\u2019s\ncollection of rare medical texts for his research.
