The reason was pretty trivial: It\nwould have been a hassle for him to drive across town from work to UK, not to\nmention find a place to park. But the impact of his broad-based Transy\neducation was anything but trivial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being so busy, Reed wasn\u2019t exactly a great student. But the\nbreadth of what he learned helped him become a great writer. \u201cI did learn a\nlittle bit about a lot of things,\u201d says the 1966 graduate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the result of Transylvania being steeped in the\nliberal arts tradition, which forces students out of well-worn ruts, helping\nthem make unexpected connections between far-flung subjects. It also develops\nthe whole person through a range of enriching activities \u2014 from mentorships to\ncultivation of self-expression and discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI became a big believer in the liberal arts,\u201d Reed says. In\nfact, one of this courtside scribe\u2019s favorite classes at Transy was Philosophy,\nReligion and Life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you read good sports writers, they will have various\nallusions \u2014 literary allusions, historical allusions,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s because\nthey\u2019ve had that kind of an education too. You can pull something out that\nyou\u2019ve learned and apply it to a current situation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also found a mentor in coaching legend C.M. Newton, who\nimparted lessons that reverberated throughout Reed\u2019s life and career. \u201cI\u2019ll\nalways remember him saying: \u2018Billy, winning is not important unless it\u2019s done\nthe right way.\u2019 That is a mantra that I\u2019ve used in my writing over and over\nagain. He helped me set my standards for journalism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reed recognizes the late coach in his book \u201cLast of a\nBReed,\u201d a celebration of the golden era of sports journalism published this\npast November. He hopes the readers will take away \u201cthe importance of people\nalong the way who will give you a hand up when you need it, who will mentor you\nand believe in you if you\u2019re willing to work hard and have a good attitude. We\nall need those kinds of people. I found a lot of them at Transy.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another alum, New York Times bestselling author David\nGillham \u201979, found inspiration at Transy in political science and history\nprofessors such as Don Dugi and Joe Binford. \u201cThey not only permitted me to\nblend my creative work with history, but they encouraged me to do so, and in\nthe process deepened my understanding of my writing and the world\u2019s historical\nand political pageants,\u201d he says. \u201cI have been writing fiction that blends\nhistory and politics ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/gillham-810x559.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6554\" width=\"385\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/gillham-810x559.jpg 810w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/gillham-350x242.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/gillham-730x504.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/gillham-768x530.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/gillham-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/gillham.jpg 1449w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Published in January, his novel \u201cAnnelies\u201d tells a fictional\nstory of Anne Frank, had she survived the concentration camps. \u201cOn a personal\nlevel, I suppose, I simply hoped to provide one of my greatest literary\nheroines with a life that she was cheated of,\u201d Gillham says. \u201cBut in a larger\nsense, I wanted to underscore what Annelies Marie Frank and her work have come\nto represent to me and to millions of others: hope.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Writing about Anne Frank was a calling for Gillham, who\nbelieves \u201ca liberal education is vital to anyone who dreams of pursuing a\nwriter\u2019s life. It opens your creative process to worlds of thought and\nexperience that expand your heart and soul. A writer can find subject matter to\nexploit in any of those worlds \u2014 not just history, literature and the social\nsciences, but math and the natural sciences as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor of English Maurice Manning, who was a finalist for\nthe 2011 Pulitzer Prize in poetry, incorporates this interdisciplinary approach\ninto his teaching. Recently, themes as diverse as popular culture, psychology,\nhistory, creativity and poetic technique came up in a single class period,\nbecause they were in the range of thought and inquiry in his students\u2019 poems,\nhe says. \u201cThis is what I always find exciting about a liberal arts education.\nWe attempt to write a poem, and upon reflection and analysis, we find the poem\nis connected to the world we live in and the vast array of intellectual\ndisciplines that capture human curiosity. I like to think that the liberal arts\napproach inspires curiosity and gives our students the hands-on skills and the\noutlook necessary to follow that spark and see where it goes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colene Elridge \u201905, author of \u201cMonday Morning Pep Talks:\nInspiration to Make Your Week Thrive,\u201d also finds inspiration in diverse,\nreal-life experiences \u2014 thanks in part to her anthropology major, which forced\nher to look at things in a new way. \u201cI find inspiration from everything,\nbecause I was taught how to observe the world,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/coleneandbook-810x520.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6555\" width=\"355\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/coleneandbook-810x520.jpg 810w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/coleneandbook-350x225.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/coleneandbook-730x468.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/coleneandbook-768x493.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/coleneandbook-1536x985.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/coleneandbook-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/coleneandbook.jpg 1559w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Elridge is a coach and motivational speaker who sends\ninspirational emails to subscribers every Monday morning. These messages are\nincluded in her book, which came out this past October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m always taking notes about things that have happened\nduring the week \u2014 random things I see,\u201d Elridge says. \u201cSometimes it\u2019s a song\nlyric or a verse that I\u2019ve read somewhere. I can be at a coffee shop and see\nsomething and think: Ooh how can I apply that in a bigger way? They\u2019ve recently made\nmultiple appearances on MSNBC\u2019s Morning Joe and were featured on Bloomberg\nRadio and in The Atlantic magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their liberal arts background helps them foster dialogue\nthat is enriched by many viewpoints. \u201cWe really try to look at each issue\nholistically and from a variety of perspectives,\u201d Silvers says. \u201cThat to me was\nthe essence of what my education at Transy was about.\u201d Transylvania taught her\nto \u201capproach everything from an interdisciplinary perspective and understand\nthat everything builds on itself and that you can\u2019t really understand sciences\nwithout the arts and vice versa. I feel like that\u2019s the foundation of what\nSarah and I do \u2014 this kind of blending of things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Holland sees the liberal arts values of\nengagement and openness as ways to incorporate politics into our lives. \u201cWe\nhope that people first and foremost see the book as a better way to understand\nand grow, and through that growing and self-awareness begin to engage with\ntheir fellow citizens, their fellow family members, their fellow community\nmembers about politics again \u2014 not just with people who agree with them,\u201d\nHolland says. \u201cWe really think that the ability to talk politics with one\nanother is essential to the health of our democracy, so we really hope this\nopens the door to people who have sort of cut politics and political\nconversations out of their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not demonizing others, seeing them as complex human beings,\nis also a goal of Alice Connor \u201999. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/connor-810x606.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6557\" width=\"359\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/connor-810x606.jpg 810w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/connor-350x262.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/connor-730x546.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/connor-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/connor-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transy.edu\/1780\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/06\/connor.jpg 1336w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Her upcoming book, \u201cHow to Human: An Incomplete Manual for\nLiving in a Messed-Up World,\u201d arose from her work as a campus minister at the\nUniversity of Cincinnati. She hopes readers will take away \u201ca sense of the\ncomplexity of human experience and a willingness to engage difficult questions\nfor themselves more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do so requires opening your mind. \u201cWe get stuck in boxes\na lot \u2014 emotional, spiritual or vocational, or sometimes physical even \u2014 we\ndon\u2019t see what\u2019s outside of them,\u201d Connor says. Not coincidentally, escaping\nmental constraints is a main goal of the liberal arts. \u201cMy experience at Transy\nopened up the idea of possibilities for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite her book being called a manual, what it asks of us\nisn\u2019t easy. \u201cMuch of the book is about vulnerability and a need to not just be\ntaken seriously ourselves as valuable people, but to take other people\nseriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo do what I\u2019m asking people to do requires a lot of\nengagement ourselves. And that\u2019s really hard and unpleasant. It\u2019s also deeply\ndelightful when you give yourself over to something like this. Collins, however\nwanted to portray him not as that, but as a person. \u201cI wanted people to realize\nhe had faults, that his parents recognized he had very human dreams and\nmissteps. I also wanted to tie him into this larger narrative of people who\ncame before and after him. His story was not the first and not the last instance\nof horrific violence or hate crimes, and I wanted people to reflect on what we\ncould learn from his story and how we should be responding when and if this\nhappens again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Transy, Collins learned that in writing there are always\ninterdisciplinary connections to be drawn. \u201cI could take a class like Sports in\nLatin America and see how that related to an anthropology class I was taking,\nand how that related to an English literature course that I was taking. Those\ninterconnected threads are a big part of writing well, because if you don\u2019t\nhave that nuance, your story is missing something. Stories aren\u2019t singular \u2014\nthey don\u2019t come out of nowhere, and there are multiple angles from which to\nview them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martha Gehringer, professor emeritus of writing, rhetoric\nand communication, facilitated this cross-fertilization of ideas across\nacademic subjects in part by helping develop a May term art and writing course\nin Ireland. She also encourages all students \u2014 regardless of their area of\nconcentration \u2014 to think of themselves as writers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re really denied something in life if you think you can\nonly write in response to an assignment,\u201d Gehringer says. \u201cThere\u2019s just\nsomething to be had for the rest of your life from learning to know the role of\nwriting \u2014 and not just to work out feelings. It\u2019s an art form, and it\u2019s\nsomething that you should know that you can do. You don\u2019t have to be good at it\n\u2014 it\u2019s just part of how you can be human. In my own life it\u2019s been that way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Richard Taylor, a former Kentucky poet laureate,\nsays Transylvania graduates tend generally to write well academically.\nAdditionally, the creative writing program flexes their imaginations in poetry,\nfiction and creative nonfiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCourses in these areas give students the chance to draw on\nthe creative intelligence all of us possess but not all of us exercise,\u201d Taylor\nsays. \u201cThese experiences are empowering.
