For two girls growing up in a small town, nothing seemed impossible. The daughters of immigrants, they learned how to live fully, to unleash every talent and to feel a responsibility to others. They aspired to lives of service that were inspired by the example of their family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As their parents organized medical missions,\ncommunity service and scholarships to help people in their country of origin,\nLora Bofill \u201994 and Mariju Bofill \u201999 learned to ask what they could do for\nothers. They witnessed the magnificence of gratitude and of giving in return. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat sense of a higher purpose fueled my sister and me,\u201d\nsays Lora Bofill. \u201cWe always had dreams of doing a lot in our lives.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sisters traveled with their parents to other parts of the world. They dreamed of participating beyond the borders of their hometown. And they chose Transylvania University as the place to build their futures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

LORA BOFILL \u201994<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Lora Bofill, MD, MA, puts a unique spin on\nthe familiar multi-faceted achiever known as a Transy Pioneer. An actor,\nproducer and entertainment writer, she is an urgent care physician and is board\ncertified in family medicine. She has served on medical missions abroad and,\nduring her family medicine residency, was presented with the Harry Shaver\nResearch Award for medical research on the smoking ban in Ohio. She\u2019s been a\nguest lecturer and has published in medical journals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lora remembers being enthralled by acting during a production of \u201cRomeo and Juliet\u201d at Transy. While waiting backstage, a fellow cast member said, \u201cOnce you’re bitten by the acting bug, the desire never goes away.\u201d  She tried to do pure science after graduating with a major in biology and a minor in music, but the artistic pull was too strong. After completing medical school, she took acting classes and graduated from the Ruskin Theatre School in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lora laughs now as she recalls how she managed to juggle acting auditions on top of 80-hour residency weeks. \u201cMy life would have made a good reality show,\u201d she says. She reminisces about wearing her pager during acting classes in case one of her patients went into labor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without question, she notes, the time management skills, the attitude she developed at Transy helped her build simultaneous careers. \u201cThe word \u2018impossible\u2019 isn\u2019t in my vocabulary,\u201d she notes, thinking back on the approach to life she learned at Transy. \u201cIt\u2019s only hard if I think it\u2019s hard.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not always a conscious decision, she\nsays. \u201cIt\u2019s innate,\u201d like the artistic side of her that needs to create or \u201cmove\npeople through a story. It\u2019s the artistic bug that doesn\u2019t go away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Lora remembers her sister, Mariju, driving her to the\nfirst professional job she landed, a national commercial for America Online (AOL).\nBoth ended up in the ad. Mariju, who had been the drama club president in high\nschool, remembers acting in \u201cThe Crucible\u201d at Transy and \u201cloved being part of\nthe theater family and the cycle of rehearsals.\u201d But, for the political science\nmajor and history minor who graduated from Transy in just three years, the\nstronger call was to attend law school at American University, propelled by her\ninterest in international human rights.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even now, in her daily work as a diplomat, she says, \u201cIt\u2019s very\nhelpful to have the theater background \u2013 to be able to understand the different\nways of communicating. \u2026 You always have to understand your script and your\naudience.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

MARIJU BOFILL \u201999 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mariju Bofill ’99 participated in the humanitarian mission \u201cEnduring Promise\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mariju Bofill\u2019s ebullience brings a kind of disarming\noptimism to the most complicated issues. This comes in handy in the field of\ndiplomacy \u2014 whether striving to redefine internal policies, building\nrelationships abroad or serving as a political advisor. Her career shows how the\nability to empathize, understand and communicate with people from disparate\nbackgrounds is paramount to negotiating political complexities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diversity of her own background \u2013 growing up in a\nsmall town, from an international background, with a liberal arts education \u2013\nmakes all the difference. She also speaks fluent Spanish, French,\nPilipino\/Tagalog and Portuguese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mariju developed an international perspective early on in\nlife as the daughter of immigrants. But she says her time at Transy provided the\nfoundational experiences that she continues to draw on, particularly her classes\nwith Jeffrey Freyman,\nprofessor emeritus of political science, who she remembers as always\nincorporating a global piece into the subject matter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c[Professor] Freyman made me care about the world,\u201d she says. \u201cHe gave me the concepts and definitions that I still use today.\u201d <\/p>Mariju Bofill ’99<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

She also counts her study abroad and the program for first-year students, as essential to developing her commitment to international affairs and civil rights — with a special interest in representing Asian Americans. Mariju participated in Transy\u2019s first semester abroad program with Regent\u2019s College in London in 1997.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was important to me to be connected to my heritage,\u201d\nshe explains, and to \u201cunderstand where we came from and how that affects where\nwe\u2019re going.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Distinguished Achievement Award during this year’s Alumni Weekend.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In law school at American University, she was elected president of the Asian American Law Student Association. Later, in the U.S. Department of State, as president of the Asian American Foreign Affairs Association, she was instrumental in reversing a policy that once precluded employees, many of whom were Asian Americans, from serving in their home countries. The American Foreign Service Association honored her with the William R. Rivkin Award for Constructive Dissent: \u201c\u2026 Recognizing that the lack of clarity and transparency in assignment restrictions hinders the department\u2019s efforts to utilize its diverse workforce and denies employees the opportunities to apply their language and cultural assets to advance the department\u2019s mission\u2026 .\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also received the Department of State\u2019s Equal Employment Opportunity Award for her leadership of the Asian American Foreign Affairs Association, which has become a model for federal affinity groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At American University, as a member of the International Human Rights Law Clinic<\/em>, Mariju worked on various\nhuman rights cases.  The Clinic was\nfamous for its work on the extradition of the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and earning protected status of females\nfacing genital mutilation. As a law clerk at the Department of Justice, she\nworked on voting rights, specifically in the South. She also clerked at the\nEnvironmental Protection Agency, focusing on consumer protections and\npesticides. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was always very much the theme of public\nservice,\u201d she says of her journey, \u201censuring that people from all walks of life\nand socioeconomic backgrounds were being treated equally and fairly under the\nlaw.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After excelling in law school, Mariju Bofill passed the bar exam and was offered a\nclerkship with a federal judge in Washington, D.C. Committed to civil\nrights and interested in international affairs, she considered a career in the Department of Justice or with an NGO. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selected as a Presidential Management Fellow, Mariju\ndelayed her clerkship when the Department of State offered her a position. Two\ndays into the fellowship, the United States was attacked by terrorists on Sept.\n11, 2001; Mariju felt compelled to be of service. She remembers asking herself,\n\u201cWhat talents do I have for my country? What could I do?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her first job was in the Office\nof the Coordinator for Counterterrorism. She became a multilateral\nofficer working with the United Nations, the European Union, the G7 and NATO to\nensure that the U.S. was coordinated with international partners on\ncounter-terrorism laws and conventions. By the end of her first year of doing international\nwork, she realized that she\u2019d found her calling. Her career had taken a different turn, but she continued to make use of\nher legal training and found the \u201canalytical thinking extremely useful.\u201d By 2004 she\u2019d\njoined the Foreign Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNothing has been more satisfying than being able to represent my country.\u201d <\/p>Mariju Bofill ‘ 99<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Overseas, she has been posted to France, Ecuador,\nMexico and Greece. Her most recent overseas assignment was as spokesperson at\nthe U.S. Consulate General in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In Washington, D.C., she served\nas the desk officer for France, Malta and Monaco; a staff assistant for the\nBureau of European and Eurasian Affairs and as the special assistant to the\nAssistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs, as well as the special assistant\nto the Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her current position, she is the Senior Coordinator\nfor Interagency Affairs in the J7\/9 Exercises and Coalition Affairs Directorate\nat U.S. Southern Command in Miami. On detail from the State Department to the\nDepartment of Defense, she works on government response to national security\npriorities in Central America, South America and the Caribbean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Always seeking\nopportunities to reach out to different communities, Mariju\u2019s recent experience\nas the first embedded foreign policy advisor (POLAD) aboard the U.S. Navy\nhospital ship, USNS Comfort, provided many ways to engage diplomatically during\nits humanitarian mission \u201cEnduring Promise\u201d last October through December 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnytime we engage with another country, that\u2019s\ndiplomacy,\u201d she explains. \u201cMy military colleagues relied on me to give them the\npolitical, economic and social context of our official relationship with the\ncountry we visited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe stops we were making included the countries most\naffected by Venezuelan migrants as a result of the crisis in Venezuela \u2013\nColombia, Peru and Ecuador,\u201d she explains, \u201cmainly to address the issues of\nthese countries\u2019 national health systems being overburdened.\u201d The ship also\nvisited Honduras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While on campus to receive Transylvania\u2019s Distinguished Achievement\nAward, Mariju took time to meet with current Pioneers and faculty, sharing the\nPioneer\u2019s sense of \u201ccuriosity about the world\u201d \u2013 so vital to a career in the\nforeign service. She was eager to impart the message and way of life that she\nand her sister learned from their parents and developed during their years at\nTransy. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
