Transylvania Vice President for Enrollment and Student Life\nHolly Sheilley was recently featured by The Lane Report in its\ncover article on the value of a college education<\/a>. Sheilley, along with higher\neducation leaders from some of Kentucky\u2019s public and private colleges, responded\nto a series of questions about what students attending college can expect as a\nreturn on their investment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to The Lane Report, \u201cFor most prospective Kentucky\ncollege students today, affordability remains a top concern, but they are more\nwilling to pay for postsecondary education if they know they will receive a\nhigh return on that investment. Namely, a job in their career field soon after\nthey toss their mortar boards into the sky on graduation day.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Transylvania, that success rate \u2013 placement in a job or\ngraduate school \u2013 is 95% within six months of graduation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are today\u2019s students more \u201ctransactional\u201d in their choice of\npostsecondary education institutions, prioritizing acquisition of marketable\nskills in exchange for their tuition dollars?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holly Sheilley: <\/strong>Absolutely. In today\u2019s digital environment,\ninformation is more transparent and readily available for prospective students\nthan ever before. This access empowers students to handpick institutions that\nare most likely to help them develop marketable skills and deliver\npost-graduation success. For example, at Transylvania, we have an abundance of\ninterest in pre-health and pre-law, primarily because of our 100-percent\nacceptance rate to law school and more than 90-percent acceptance rate for recommended\nstudents to health professions schools. One of the top priorities of students\nand families is knowing they will have a long-term return on their investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What institutional characteristics do prospective students\nask about or seem to value highly?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sheilley<\/strong>:\nUltimately,\nthe goal for most students\u2019 college search is finding a school that will give\nthem the knowledge they need to walk away and be successful in their field. We\ntailor our liberal arts education to do that. Students often ask about our\nstudent-to-faculty ratio, which is designed to promote a comfortable,\npersonalized environment in which to learn. The faculty-student relationship\nsets us apart; hiring only well-qualified faculty with terminal degrees in\ntheir field, instead of graduate or teaching assistants, increases the quality\nof teaching and learning. Resources are also paramount to students who\nunderstand the value of making connections outside campus. Internships and\nsuccessful mentors outside the classroom make students more marketable in the\nworkforce. They want to love what they do and have a career, not just a job.\nThat\u2019s why preparing students for a fulfilling career is our mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your \u201cvalue proposition\u201d to today\u2019s students? What do\nyou tell prospective students is the reason they should choose your institution\nover others?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sheilley:\n<\/strong>When\nyou leave Transy, you are going to be world-ready. Whether it\u2019s going to\ngraduate school or launching into the marketplace, you\u2019ll be able to compete at\nthe highest level. The success of our alumni and 95% placement rate six months\nafter graduation validates the quality of learning at Transy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And students are going to graduate in four years. Our students\nare in the workforce earlier than their peers. Many families don\u2019t realize the\nnational four-year graduation rate is 33%; a majority of students stay for year\nfive and six. Transy has instituted a four-year graduation guarantee. Plus, our\nsmall default rate \u2013 2.9% compared with 11.5% nationally for public schools \u2013\nshows that the market values Transy grads and will pay for the quality they\nbring to the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
