Jack Berger marvels a bit when considering his career path.\nArriving at Transy four years ago, Berger figured he\u2019d be a philosophy,\npolitics and economics major and then go to law school. \u201cSounded like a good\nanswer at the time,\u201d he says with a laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But, as he took classes introducing him to economics, he\nfound that he \u201creally liked them.\u201d Professors encouraged him to take math\nclasses in order to handle the challenges awaiting him in quantitative\neconomics. He liked those too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019d never thought of myself as a math person,\u201d he admits,\nbut was taken by the more abstract dimensions of higher level math. \u201cYou have\nto think deeply to get a question right,\u201d he notes. Math became his minor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then Professor of Economics Rod Erfani invited Berger to\nwork with him over the summer. With the help of a grant from the Kenan Fund for Faculty\nand Student Enrichment, Berger was able to \u201cexamine the determinants of foreign direct investment\ninflows to a panel of Asian countries.\u201d He presented the results of his research at the annual conference of\nthe Kentucky Economic Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the process of conducting research, Berger found that\nhe \u201cliked the idea of creating new knowledge.\u201d As with science, he added, \u201cothers\ncan build off your work. Eventually, it can make a difference.\u201d The experience\nbecame a defining moment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt made clear to me that this was what I wanted to do as\na career,\u201d Berger recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Berger says he\u2019s enjoyed the liberal arts at Transylvania\nand now is ready to focus all of his attention on the field of economics\u2014and\nhis dissertation. The economics major will soon begin a Ph.D. at Indiana\nUniversity, where he will receive a full ride and a stipend for 20 hours a week\nas a teaching assistant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
